Western Alaska is dealing with damaging flooding due to hurricane-force wind gusts and heavy rainfall, which has triggered rescues as Typhoon Halong\u2019s remnants are continuing to cause impacts along the coast.<\/p>\n
A strong coastal storm generated by the remnants of Halong<\/a> made the move Sunday into the Bering Sea, unleashing hurricane-force wind gusts, huge waves and severe coastal flooding onto the Kuskokwim Delta and other communities towards the south of the Bering Strait. It\u2019s being reported by Alaska Public Media<\/a> that some residents in the area of Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta are missing or stuck in their houses because of the high waters.<\/p>\n For a week, storm surge has been causing flooding. Reaching 6.71 feet, which is over 5 feet the normal level, the Kotzebue Sound Tide Gauge eclipsed major flood stage Thursday, according to FOX Weather<\/a>.<\/p>\n Many communities across Western Alaska are facing devastating flooding and storm damage from the remnants of Typhoon Halong. To help with search and rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard was deployed<\/a> to Kwigillingok and Kipnuk. The American Red Cross also responded following the damage done in the Kipnuk, Kwigillingok, Kotzebue, Nome and Bethal villages.<\/p>\n Alaska<\/a> Gov. Mike Dunleavy expanded<\/a> his state disaster declaration Sunday to add Pribilof Island, Yupitt and Lower Kuskokwim Regional Education Attendance Areas.<\/p>\n Parts of Western Alaska<\/a> have seen sustained winds of 60 mph with a 100 mph gust recorded Sunday, according to the National Weather Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n Flooding is expected to continue due to Halong\u2019s remnants through Monday.
