OCEAN CITY, N.J. — Powerful winds and flooding swept through Ocean City on Sunday as a coastal storm pummeled the Jersey Shore, bringing gusts up to 60 miles per hour and prompting road closures throughout the day.<\/p>\n
“The wind is so strong,” said Scott Hartranft of Somers Point. “I’ve been down here many a times before but never this strong.”<\/p>\n
The storm’s force could be felt along the boardwalk, where debris was scattered and waves crashed against the shore.<\/p>\n
“It feels like it’s coming,” said Zack Mace of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, as he and his family tried to enjoy a brief walk before conditions worsened. “We moved the cars earlier today but behind that that’s all of the preparing we’re doing. We pulled our stuff from the decks and stuff.”<\/p>\n
Forecasters warned that another round of flooding could occur after midnight with the next high tide. Up to several inches of rain are expected along the coast.<\/p>\n
“Make sure everything’s charged up, make sure nothing is going to blow away, minimize what you can, make sure nothing gets damaged,” Mace said.<\/p>\n
In nearby areas, residents reported significant flooding and beach erosion.<\/p>\n
“We saw really bad flooding earlier today, like the beach was all the way up to the beginning of the walkway there,” said Andy Chermela of Lafayette Hill.<\/p>\n
For some, the storm was a disappointment after plans to enjoy the beach were washed out.<\/p>\n
“I feel sad ’cause I wanted to go to the beach,” said 9-year-old Lydia, who was still able to enjoy some ice cream despite the weather.<\/p>\n
Lydia also offered a bit of advice: “You shouldn’t go out when it’s flooding.”<\/p>\n
Authorities urged residents to stay cautious as the storm continues to move through the region overnight.
