SELMA, Ala. (WSFA<\/a>) – \u201cThe Alabama Solution\u201d<\/a> shows problems in the Alabama prison system from the inside: whether it be allegations of overcrowding, rampant violence, the influx of illegal drugs, or other concerns.<\/p>\n

Prison reform activists hosted a free screening of the documentary \u2014 which is currently available on HBO \u2014 in Selma for increased accessibility and to kick-start conversations.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everybody is afforded HBO subscriptions,\u201d explained Rodreshia Russaw-Glasgow, the Executive Director of The Ordinary People Society<\/a>. \u201cNot only that, there\u2019s going to be some healing connection, and there\u2019s going to be some rubbing of the shoulders that needs to happen, because this film is very heavy and it feels different when you\u2019re watching it by yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film provides unique insight into the daily lives of what it\u2019s like to be locked up in an Alabama prison, because much of the footage was filmed by the inmates themselves while incarcerated. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to be seeing the inhumane treatment from prison staff,\u201d explained Diyawn Caldwell, founder of Both Sides of the Wall<\/a>. \u201cAnd how people are dying on a daily basis under the supervision and care of staff inside the prison system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bruce Adams can speak from ten years of experience behind bars. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe conditions are unbearable,\u201d Adams said. \u201cThe food they feed you is unbearable; the guards are unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Al Sharpton\u2019s half-brother Kenneth Glasgow has also been incarcerated, and a long-time reform advocate. <\/p>\n

\u201cI did a lot of work out here, I changed laws in six different states since I\u2019ve been doing this 31 year (reform) tenure and went to prison for this work<\/a>,\u201d Glasgow explained. \u201cStill, to see them do work on the inside to this capacity is even greater. I\u2019m just glad to be able to contribute to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

There will also be free showings in Dothan, Mobile, Huntsville, and Montgomery. <\/p>\n

The Montgomery showing is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Greater Destiny Worship Center.<\/p>\n
