{"id":222981,"date":"2025-10-14T02:36:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T02:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/222981\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T02:36:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T02:36:11","slug":"the-mystery-of-time-why-physics-still-cant-agree-on-what-it-really-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/222981\/","title":{"rendered":"The mystery of time: Why physics still can\u2019t agree on what it really is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time has occupied the greatest minds for centuries and we\u2019re still none the wiser about its absolute nature.<\/p>\n<p>Although there\u2019s nothing in physics that says time must flow in a certain direction, nor precisely what time is, we can generally agree that it\u2019s a very real property of the Universe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two bastions of modern physics, General Relativity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/science\/quantum-physics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quantum mechanics<\/a>, view time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667325823002819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">different ways<\/a>. In relativity, time is regarded as a coordinate \u2013 much like the three spatial coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein showed that these are intimately linked and that the progression of time is relative, not absolute. This means that the faster you travel, the more time slows down compared to someone \u2018stationary\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bizarrely, a photon travelling at the speed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/science\/how-the-brightest-minds-in-science-from-einstein-to-da-vinci-revealed-the-nature-of-light\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light<\/a> experiences no passage of time at all. For it, everything happens simultaneously!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quantum mechanics, which deals with the macroscopic world, views time as merely a fundamental parameter; an unvarying and unidirectional flow from the past to the future, separate from the dimensions of space and separate from the object (for example, a particle).<\/p>\n<p>This difference puts these two great theories at odds, and is one of the problems facing physicists trying to unite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/space\/gravity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gravity<\/a> and quantum theories into one \u2018grand unified theory\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, however, neither General Relativity nor quantum mechanics regard time as a \u2018field\u2019 \u2013 a physical quantity that permeates space and has the ability to influence the properties of certain particles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each of the four fundamental force fields (gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force) involve an exchange of particles.<\/p>\n<p>These can be viewed as \u2018carrying\u2019 the force. In electromagnetism it\u2019s the photon that\u2019s the \u2018force carrier\u2019, whereas the strong interaction is carried by particles called \u2018gluons\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In gravity it\u2019s the (as yet undiscovered) \u2018graviton\u2019 that carries the force, although there\u2019s currently no fully successful quantum description of gravity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Time-particle-1.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract lights\" class=\"wp-image-207971\"\/>Scientists still don&#8217;t understand time, but it doesn&#8217;t seem to have a physical quality, like a mass &#8211; Credit: oxygen via Getty<\/p>\n<p>Other \u2018fields\u2019 imbue particles with certain properties. The Higgs field, for example, involves the exchange of Higgs bosons and gives particles their mass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In physics, time, whatever its precise nature, is fundamentally different to a \u2018field\u2019. It isn\u2019t a physical quantity (like charge or mass, for example), doesn\u2019t impart a force, or determine the interactions of particles.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, in modern physics, time isn\u2019t defined by a mediating particle like the four fundamental forces of nature. There\u2019s no need (or indeed sense) for a \u2018time particle\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, recent research has suggested that time may actually be an illusion.
