{"id":223610,"date":"2025-10-14T09:06:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/223610\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T09:06:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:06:14","slug":"why-are-gdp-growth-projections-picking-up-steam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/223610\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are GDP growth projections picking up steam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite everything that\u2019s going on in this economy right now \u2014 tariffs, inflation, and a sluggish job market \u2014 gross domestic product is likely to grow even more than expected.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics. Back in June, they expected the economy to grow by 1.3% this year. Now they expect it to add 1.8%. And <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantafed.org\/cqer\/research\/gdpnow\">according to the Atlanta Fed\u2019s GDPNow tracker,<\/a> growth in the third quarter could be as high as 3.8%.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how gross domestic product is calculated: It\u2019s consumption, plus government spending, plus investment, plus exports, minus imports.<\/p>\n<p>That last piece pulled GDP down early in the year, because businesses imported a ton of stuff to get ahead of tariffs.\u00a0But after that, things changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw a reversal. We saw a significant drop in imports in the middle of the year,\u201d said JoAnne Feeney at Advisors Capital Management.<\/p>\n<p>That led GDP to rebound. But it wasn\u2019t just imports.\u00a0The next piece of the equation is capital investment, and that\u2019s been huge thanks to the <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=a529c0588d7284821&amp;q=https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/08\/28\/spending-on-ai-data-centers-could-run-to-the-trillions-of-dollars-by-the-end-of-the-decade&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiApNyBk6KQAxVHEUQIHXK3CX0QFnoECAgQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw2fPsmd7r8k7HI4iEf1JnJe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">buildout of AI data centers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are expensive facilities full of domestically designed and produced equipment, and that is absolutely having a significant impact on the investment numbers,\u201d Feeney said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also having a big positive impact on the stock market. And that\u2019s propping up consumer spending, especially among people who own stocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople at the very top have, through a sort of wealth effect, been powering consumption,\u201d said Stephanie Kelton, a professor of economics at Stony Brook University.<\/p>\n<p>As reported before, <a class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/09\/17\/top-10-of-earners-make-up-half-of-us-retail-spending\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the top 10% of earners<\/a> were responsible for as much as 50% of consumer spending for part of this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s pushed up GDP, even as the next piece of the equation \u2014 government spending \u2014 has been a drag, Kelton said.<\/p>\n<p>Add all this together, and GDP looks pretty good, for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t feel sustainable to me,\u201d said Shannon Grein, an economist at Wells Fargo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is still just a lot of <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=a529c0588d7284821&amp;q=https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/01\/09\/is-economic-uncertainty-a-feeling-or-a-fact&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjRv9vMlKKQAxXcLEQIHcmXFvMQFnoECAEQAg&amp;usg=AOvVaw2x2kgp3v03JZ6RMbe1c-5H\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncertainty<\/a> in the economy, she said \u2014 around tariffs, interest rates, and the government shutdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this uncertainty, from what we&#8217;re hearing anecdotally, and what we&#8217;re seeing in the data is leading to just broad confusion and kind of just a halting in behavior of businesses,\u201d Grein said.<\/p>\n<p>She thinks that\u2019ll start to show up in the form of slower GDP growth in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Related Topics<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Despite everything that\u2019s going on in this economy right now \u2014 tariffs, inflation, and a sluggish job market&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":223611,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36],"tags":[28,11635,22318,101,38473,107448],"class_list":["post-223610","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-capital-investment","tag-consumption","tag-economy","tag-gdp-growth","tag-gross-domestic-product-gdp"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/223610","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=223610"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/223610\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/223611"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=223610"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=223610"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=223610"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
