Overall, tropical forests are thought to be carbon sinks \u2013 absorbing more CO2 than they release \u2013 and uptake is assumed to increase amid rising atmospheric concentration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But nearly 50 years of data collected from tropical forests across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/queensland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a> has revealed this crucial carbon sink could be under threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 25 years ago, tree trunks and branches in those forests became a net emitter, with more trees dying and insufficient new growth, according to the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s the first tropical forest of its kind to show this symptom of change,\u201d said lead author, Dr Hannah Carle from Western Sydney University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe know that the moist tropics in Australia occupy a bit of a warmer, drier climate space than tropical forests on other continents, and therefore it might serve as a future analog for what tropical forests will experience in other parts of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof Adrienne Nicotra from Australian National University, a co-author of the study, said it remained to be seen whether Australia\u2019s tropical forests were a harbinger for other tropical forests globally, and further research was needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But if so, the findings could have significant implications for global climate models, carbon budgets and climate policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis paper is the first time that this tipping point of a switch from a carbon sink to a carbon source in tropical rainforests has been identified clearly \u2013 not just for one year, but for 20 years,\u201d said Prof David Karoly, an emeritus professor at the University of Melbourne and an expert in climate change science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Karoly, who was not involved in the research, said on a global scale, the share of carbon dioxide absorbed by forests, trees, and plants had been quite stable over the last 20 to 30 years, which was assumed to continue under many climate models and policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But if similar shifts \u2013 from sink to source \u2013 were observed in other rainforests, climate projections may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/aug\/15\/we-should-have-better-answers-by-now-climate-scientists-baffled-by-unexpected-pace-of-heating\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underestimate global warming in future<\/a>. \u201cWhich is bad news,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-14\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1sbse14\">Sign up to Clear Air Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Adam Morton brings you incisive analysis about the politics and impact of the climate crisis<\/p>\n<p>Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. But their reduced capacity to absorb extra carbon would make emissions cuts \u201ca lot harder\u201d, and require an even more rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/commentisfree\/2024\/dec\/02\/could-the-decline-of-fossil-fuels-be-australias-chance-to-become-into-a-clean-exports-giant\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transition away from fossil fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The analysis drew on a unique set of forest data dating back to 1971, including records tracking roughly 11,000 trees across 20 forest sites in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/queensland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a>. It considered the carbon stored above ground in tree trunks and branches, but not the gains and losses below ground from soil and roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Raphael Trouve, who studies forest dynamics at the University of Melbourne and was not involved in the study, said the research highlighted the value of collecting and maintaining long term data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trouve\u2019s own research published earlier this year, which found mountain ash forests were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/aug\/22\/victoria-mountain-ash-forests-could-lose-quarter-giant-trees-temperatures-rise\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thinning rapidly<\/a> under drier and hotter conditions, relied on a different 50-year dataset collected in Victorian forests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The surprising findings in tropical rainforests showed the value of the data in quantifying changes in the environment, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe thought the forest would be able to store more carbon because [CO2] is increasing.
