One of the knock-on effects of some of the less, let\u2019s say, \u201cplanet-devouringly successful\u201d\u00a0streaming services having to make do with smaller brands when it comes to adaptations is that, when they actually manage to translate one of those names into a genuine hit, they hold on for dear life. Take, for instance, the little universe of shows that Amazon Studios has built out of Michael Connolly\u2019s Bosch<\/a>\u00a0books, which started with a seven-season Titus Welliver show that has now spawned two separate spin-offs:\u00a0Bosch: Legacy, essentially just a sequel, and this year\u2019s Ballard<\/a>, which was just renewed for a second season. But each of these shows, while certainly\u00a0Bosch-adjacent, failed to answer an incredibly important\u00a0Bosch\u00a0query for the Bosch fanatics: What was Hieronymous \u201cHarry\u201d Bosch like as a much younger man, played by what we\u2019re guessing will be a somewhat cheaper actor?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right: In the style of the r<\/a>ecently canceled\u00a0Young Dexter\u00a0series<\/a> (a.k.a.\u00a0Dexter: Original Sin) and CBS\u2019s NCIS: Origins, Bosch is getting a rewind-to-his-early-days series of his own. Officially titled Bosch: Start Of Watch\u2014and not The Bosch Baby\u00a0as our brains repeatedly insist\u2014the series will star\u00a0Shameless\u2018 Cameron Monaghan as the younger version of Welliver\u2019s character, getting his start as an LAPD detective.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear at present which of Connelly\u2019s books, if any, will serve as source material for the show; past seasons of the original Bosch\u00a0worked their way through pretty much all of the early books in the series, and even those begin with Harry Bosch already a Vietnam veteran who\u2019s taken down at least one major serial killer in his time on the force. That being said, Connelly\u00a0has\u00a0written more than 40 novels at this point in his shared universe of tough-as-nails crime fighters, so producers will presumably be able to harvest\u00a0something\u00a0from the corpus for this extended flashback.<\/p>\n

Start Of Watch\u00a0is expected to debut on MGM+ some time next year; in addition to Monaghan, Omari Hardwick is also expected to star, as a veteran detective taking Baby Bosch under his wing.<\/p>\n

Bosch spin-off Ballard mostly does its predecessor proud<\/a>R.I.P.
