{"id":228155,"date":"2025-10-16T04:08:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T04:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/228155\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T04:08:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T04:08:17","slug":"pink-tap-water-in-somerset-county-town-deemed-safe-to-drink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/228155\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink tap water in Somerset County town deemed safe to drink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B7GSKBXXVJHZ5ATMVBRHRAKV6I\">Some residents in several New Jersey towns may be concerned to see water with a \u201cpinkish hue\u201d running from their faucets \u2014 but it\u2019s safe to drink, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FTZIYHWDONB2VOJXMA6QWXSH34\">Higher levels of sodium permanganate have led to reports of discolored water in the Raritan System, according to a statement from <a href=\"https:\/\/amwater.com\/njaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/amwater.com\/njaw\/\">New Jersey American Water<\/a>, posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/Manville-Borough-OEM\/100069124633512\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook<\/a> Wednesday by the Manville Borough Office of Emergency Management. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FYPM3BTPXVGLBA4BBRXVTCDL4I\">Sodium permanganate is used to treat water at the Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant, officials said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DLE5GHMRY5BXHBRS7GW6ZR3VOU\">Several municipalities, including Bound Brook, Bridgewater, Manville, Hillsborough, Somerville, Raritan Borough, Dunellen, Piscataway, and Plainfield may experience water discoloration, according to officials. In rare cases, the discoloration may appear pink. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QK4WUCSUJZAOXIHFVDCTLHXCCE\">\u201cThough there is no impact to drinking water quality and the water meets drinking water standards, you may wish to refrain from doing laundry during this time,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ME4IF2NSG5GKPKBWOKZCLUV3HQ\">Crews have started flushing hydrants to help clear the system, which may cause low water pressure or discoloration for some customers, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HDKU2VZGMBAABAAHFEKATT2754\">The discoloration is expected to improve as the flushing continues, said Chelsea Kulp, director of communications and external affairs for New Jersey American Water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"APF4YMHT6BHURPFD2QLHHVGAYQ\">Kulp said most customers in the impacted towns will not experience the discoloration, which was first reported in Bridgewater. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7IUT6HZRFVFRVAWQD5S5SHRIHY\">Those with discolored water are advised to run the cold water taps at the lowest levels of their home for about three to five minutes until the water runs clear. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YL5XZGNDKZCXDJJDANOTTZP76A\">The Raritan System serves more than 50 New Jersey municipalities, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amwater.com\/ccr\/raritan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2024 report<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HOTWRILH7BFKDJXAOAOJX765FY\">\u201cWe thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this issue,\u201d officials said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
