WASHINGTON — WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration is looking to provide an additional $20 billion in financing for Argentina<\/a> through a mix of financing from sovereign funds and the private sector. <\/p>\n

That would come on top of the $20 billion credit swap line<\/a> that the U.S. Treasury pledged to Argentine President Javier Milei<\/a> and his government this month to bolster the South American nation’s collapsing currency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working on a $20 billion facility that would complement our swap line, with private banks and sovereign funds that, I believe, would be more focused on the debt market,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters Wednesday. He called it \u201ca private-sector solution\u201d and said “many banks are interested in it and many sovereign funds have expressed interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a White House meeting<\/a> Tuesday with Milei, Republican President Donald Trump said his administration wanted to help \u201cour neighbors\u201d with the aid package, but he also suggested that the money could be pulled<\/a> if Milei’s party did not prevail in the Oct. 26 midterm elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he loses, we are not going to be generous with Argentina,” Trump said.<\/p>\n

The Argentine peso weakened slightly Wednesday after Trump’s comments. The peso depreciated about 0.7%, with the dollar \u2014 the currency Argentines rely on to save \u2014 trading at 1,395 pesos, compared with 1,385 pesos the previous day.<\/p>\n

On Wall Street, shares of major Argentine companies rose slightly after dropping as much as 8.1% Tuesday upon Trump’s comments.<\/p>\n

In Argentina, the opposition\u2019s criticism was swift.<\/p>\n

Former President Cristina Fern\u00e1ndez, who is under house arrest after a corruption conviction, wrote on social media: \u201cTrump to Milei in the United States: \u2018Our agreements depend on who wins election.\u2019 Argentines \u2026 you already know what to do!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mart\u00edn Lousteau, president of the centrist Radical Civic Union, said \u201cTrump doesn\u2019t want to help a country \u2014 he only wants to save Milei,\u201d and that \u201cnothing good can come of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maximiliano Ferraro, head of the opposition Civic Coalition, called Trump\u2019s comments \u201ca blatant act of extortion against the Argentine Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
