{"id":229870,"date":"2025-10-16T20:40:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/229870\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T20:40:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:40:15","slug":"sandhill-crane-thats-taken-up-residence-in-regina-draws-bird-fans-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/229870\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandhill crane that&#8217;s taken up residence in Regina draws bird fans, concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regina&#8217;s Wascana Park is often filled with geese, so a lone sandhill crane that&#8217;s been spotted in the area is causing a bit of a stir.<\/p>\n<p>Bird fans like Dacie Matchett-Orb and her 11-year-old son Chevy have been flocking to the park to look for the crane.<\/p>\n<p>Early last week, they decided to try their luck near the Saskatchewan Science Centre \u2014 a spot where people had reported seeing the sandhill crane \u2014 but arrived to find no sight of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Matchett-Orb checked the area near the Conexus Arts Centre and spotted the tall, red-crowned bird, then returned with her son after school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was excited because I saw him that morning, but my son was super, super excited,\u201dsaid Matchett-Orb. <\/p>\n<p>She said her son has always had an obsession with birds \u2014 a love he shares with his grandmother \u2014 and has been taking photos of them since he was six years old. (Submitted by Dacie Matchett-Orb)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got some really good shots of [the crane] lying down and he said, &#8216;We need to print them for my grandmother.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The executive director for the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, Bonnie Dell, said she believes the bird is injured as it doesn&#8217;t appear able to fly long distances, and sandhill cranes aren&#8217;t usually found in urban settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur biggest message is, leave this poor bird alone,\u201d Dell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WATCH | CBC videographer finds elusive sandhill crane in Regina:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760647215_262_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">It&#8217;s not a wild goose chase. CBC videographer finds the elusive sandhill crane in Regina.<\/p>\n<p>Video captured Wednesday afternoon by CBC Saskatchewan videographer Will Draper shows the sandhill crane that&#8217;s been spotted around Regina.<\/p>\n<p>There have been several instances during the past few months of people crowding around the crane, said Dell, adding there have even been times dogs have chased after it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The birds] are trying to build up calories to keep themselves warm and making this bird stressed,\u00a0unnecessarily, burns up that extra energy that it needs right now just to survive,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dell is asking people to quit searching for the bird and refrain from posting its location on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan is working alongside Salt Haven to capture the sandhill crane and bring it into care.
