The survey was conducted Oct. 7-13, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone who took part is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. The survey was conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This report also includes an analysis of job availability, job characteristics and workforce demographics based of federal government data. Visit the methodology section for more information on these data sources.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/12\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_questionnaire.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">questions used for this report<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/12\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_topline.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">topline<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/12\/10\/americans-jobs-methodology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>References to workers include those who are employed part time or full time and who have only one job or have more than one but consider one of them to be their primary job.<\/p>\n<p>References to White, Black and Asian adults include those who are not Hispanic and identify as only one race. Hispanics are of any race.<\/p>\n<p>References to college graduates or people with a college degree comprise those with a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education. \u201cSome college\u201d includes those with an associate degree and those who attended college but did not obtain a degree. \u201cHigh school\u201d refers to those who have a high school diploma or its equivalent, such as a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiddle income\u201d is defined here as two-thirds to double the median annual family income for panelists on the American Trends Panel. \u201cLower income\u201d falls below that range; \u201cupper income\u201d falls above it. Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/12\/10\/americans-jobs-methodology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">methodology<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n<p>Amid low unemployment nationwide, U.S. workers are feeling good about their level of job security, and relatively few expect to look for a new job in the coming months, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, only half of workers say they are extremely or very satisfied with their job overall. And a much smaller share are highly satisfied with their pay \u2013 30%, down from 34% last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The survey, conducted Oct. 7-13 among 5,273 employed U.S. adults, explores how workers see various aspects of their jobs, including how they assess the importance of certain skills and their own opportunities for further training. <\/p>\n<p>Key findings<\/p>\n<p>White and older workers are among the most satisfied with their job overall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/?attachment_id=195529\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-dominant-color=\"d6ddd5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d6ddd5;\" decoding=\"async\"  height=\"603\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_00-01.png\" alt=\"Chart shows Job satisfaction is highest among White and older workers\" class=\"wp-image-195529 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>55% of White workers say they are extremely or very satisfied, compared with 44% of Hispanic workers, 43% of Black workers and 42% of Asian workers.<\/p>\n<p>Among workers ages 65 and older, two-thirds say they are highly satisfied with their job. Just 43% of workers ages 18 to 29 say the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Workers with middle and upper family incomes are more likely than those with lower incomes to express high levels of job satisfaction (53% and 54% vs. 42%).<\/p>\n<p>Among the 29% of workers who are not too or not at all satisfied with their pay, the top reason given is that their wages haven\u2019t kept up with increases in cost of living.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/?attachment_id=195530\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-dominant-color=\"d9e1df\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d9e1df;\" decoding=\"async\"  height=\"484\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_00-02.png\" alt=\"Chart shows Falling behind cost-of-living increases is top reason for workers\u2019 dissatisfaction with pay\" class=\"wp-image-195530 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Large shares also say their pay is too low for the quality (71%) or amount (70%) of work they do.<\/p>\n<p>54% say a major reason they are dissatisfied is that they don\u2019t earn enough to pay their bills.<\/p>\n<p>Lower-income workers who are dissatisfied with their pay are far more likely than those with middle and upper incomes to cite the fact that they don\u2019t earn enough to pay their bills (69% vs. 51% and 30%).<\/p>\n<p>Large majorities of workers across all family income levels say their pay hasn\u2019t kept up with cost-of-living increases.<\/p>\n<p>Half of workers think of their current job as a career, while 15% say it\u2019s a stepping stone to one. About a third (35%) say it\u2019s just a job to get them by.<\/p>\n<p>58% of workers with lower incomes say their job is just something to get them by, compared with 31% of those with middle incomes and 17% of those with higher incomes.<\/p>\n<p>Workers ages 18 to 29 are less likely than those in older age groups to say they see their job as a career. Still, a majority of young workers say their job is either a career or a stepping stone.<\/p>\n<p>Half of workers ages 65 and older say their job is just something to get them by, larger than the shares of workers ages 50 to 64 (34%), 30 to 49 (31%) and 18 to 29 (38%) who say the same.<\/p>\n<p>Most workers (69%) feel that they have a great deal or a fair amount of job security.<\/p>\n<p>Another 17% say they have some job security, and 13% say they have little or none.<\/p>\n<p>75% of White workers say they have at least a fair amount of job security, compared with smaller majorities of Asian (62%), Black (58%) and Hispanic (57%) workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While about seven-in-ten or more among upper- and middle-income workers say they have a great deal or a fair amount of job security (78% and 71%), a smaller share of lower-income workers (54%) say the same.<\/p>\n<p>Workers are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2022\/07\/28\/majority-of-u-s-workers-changing-jobs-are-seeing-real-wage-gains\/#roughly-one-in-five-workers-say-they-re-likely-to-look-for-a-new-job-in-the-next-six-months\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">much more likely than in 2022<\/a> to say it would be difficult for them to get the kind of job they\u2019d want if they were to look for a new one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/?attachment_id=195531\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e7e7e2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e7e7e2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  height=\"394\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_00-03.png\" alt=\"Chart shows Workers are more likely than in 2022 to say it would be hard to get a job they\u2019d want if they were searching today\" class=\"wp-image-195531 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>52% of workers say this would be difficult, compared with 37% in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Workers ages 18 to 29 (58%) and those with lower incomes (62%) are especially likely to say this would be difficult for them.<\/p>\n<p>As was the case in 2022, most workers (63%) say they\u2019re unlikely to look for a new job in the next six months.<\/p>\n<p>Most workers (70%) say they currently have the education and training they need to get ahead in their job or career, while 30% say they need more education and training.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether they say they need it, 51% say they have received training in the past 12 months, while a similar share (49%) say they have not.<\/p>\n<p>Among workers who say they need more education and training, 28% say learning on the job would be the best way for them to get it. About a quarter say completing a certificate program (24%) or getting more formal education (24%) would be the best way.<\/p>\n<p>Among workers who need training but didn\u2019t get any in the last year, many point to time and resource constraints as major reasons for not doing so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/?attachment_id=195532\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dfe5e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dfe5e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  height=\"444\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_00-04.png\" alt=\"Chart shows Time and resource constraints are workers\u2019 top reasons for not getting extra job training\" class=\"wp-image-195532 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>43% say they couldn\u2019t find the time, 38% say they couldn\u2019t afford it and 28% say their employer wouldn\u2019t cover the cost.<\/p>\n<p>41% of workers with lower incomes and 43% of those with middle incomes who say they need but did not get training say they couldn\u2019t afford it. Only 11% of upper-income workers say the same.<\/p>\n<p>About four-in-ten workers (42%) say most Americans have a great deal or a fair amount of respect for people who do the type of work they do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/?attachment_id=195533\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e7e2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e7e2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  height=\"481\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PST_2024.12.10_americans-jobs_00-05.png\" alt=\"Chart shows Workers with more education and higher incomes are among the most likely to say people respect those who do the type of work they do\" class=\"wp-image-195533 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Workers with less education and lower incomes \u2013 and those whose jobs involve manual or physical labor \u2013 are among the least likely to say most Americans have a lot of respect for people who do their type of job.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, majorities of workers across education and income levels and regardless of the type of work they do say their supervisors, co-workers and clients or customers treat them with respect all or most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>What work looks like today<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the survey findings, the report uses government data to examine labor market changes in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>Among the key trends:<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the unemployment rate was 3.6%, one of the lowest in the past 70 years.<\/p>\n<p>Job tenure data shows that workers are not job-hopping more than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Wages are up compared with 2000 after adjusting for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The shares of workers who are Asian, Hispanic, immigrants or have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree have grown significantly since 2000.
