{"id":232917,"date":"2025-10-18T02:58:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T02:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/232917\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T02:58:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T02:58:10","slug":"former-grand-slam-quarterfinalist-suggests-whether-john-mcenroe-would-be-competitive-in-todays-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/232917\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Grand Slam quarterfinalist suggests whether John McEnroe would be competitive in today&#8217;s game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   <a class=\"fw\" href=\"https:\/\/profile.google.com\/cp\/Cg0vZy8xMXlnMTNoeXE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"28\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grv-media\/img\/google-discover.svg\" alt=\"\"\/> Follow us on Google Discover <\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>John McEnroe enjoyed a legendary tennis career, picking up Grand Slam titles during the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>The outspoken American broke through to win his first major at the 1979 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a>, defeating his countryman Vitas Gerulaitis in the final.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next five years, McEnroe beat the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/bjorn-borg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bjorn Borg<\/a>, Jimmy Connors, and Ivan Lendl in Grand Slam finals, taking his tally to seven.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-772455071-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg shake hands after the 1981 Wimbledon final\" class=\"wp-image-136896\" \/>Photo by Tony Duffy\/Allsport\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He also spent an impressive 170 weeks ranked number one in the world in singles and 269 weeks as number one in doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Few players can touch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/john-mcenroe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McEnroe\u2019s<\/a> legacy, but how would he have performed in today\u2019s game?<\/p>\n<p>During an exclusive interview with The Tennis Gazette, former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP<\/a> pro Ronald Agenor answered that question.<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Agenor believes John McEnroe would be a top-three player on the ATP Tour today<\/p>\n<p>Haiti\u2019s Agenor reached a career-high ranking of 22nd in the world in 1989, following his run to the quarterfinals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/french-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on how tennis has changed over the years, Agenor regretfully admitted that the sport has \u2018regressed\u2019 in one key area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the technical level has regressed, in terms of what players can do on the court,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always took tennis as an art; what players were doing with the ball in the \u201960s and \u201970s was absolutely extraordinary to me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"799\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2199129582-1024x799.jpg\" alt=\"Ronald Agenor hits a backhand at the Queen's Club Championships in 2000\" class=\"wp-image-136901\" \/>Photo by Stu Forster\/Allsport\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything was attacking, attacking, attacking. I\u2019m always admiring artists on the court, more than physical players who try to overpower the other one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always like to watch different styles of games, that\u2019s what makes great players. Jannik Sinner \u2013 10,000 points<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[Jannik] Sinner<\/a> and [Carlos] Alcaraz are the best players in the world,\u201d said Agenor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, I put Sinner on a higher note than Alcaraz, even though Alcaraz won the last tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agenor took the time to point out the differences in the way Alcaraz and Sinner play tennis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the art of the game, we\u2019ve lost a lot of it.
