{"id":233442,"date":"2025-10-18T08:05:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T08:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/233442\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T08:05:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T08:05:13","slug":"u-s-drought-monitor-extreme-conditions-spread-in-four-maine-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/233442\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Drought Monitor: &#8216;Extreme&#8217; conditions spread in four Maine counties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Extreme&#8221; drought conditions have expanded since the last update, with most of Maine still in &#8220;severe&#8221; drought, impacting wells and crop yields.<\/p>\n<p>MAINE, USA \u2014 More of Maine is in &#8220;extreme&#8221; drought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/tech\/science\/environment\/us-drought-monitor-maine-drought-dry-conditions-rain-weather\/97-7dd6d4ce-20f6-4711-885e-745754085cd3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">since last week<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Thursday update from the U.S. Drought Monitor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The map showed that drier conditions have spread north into Franklin and Washington counties, with the latter now almost entirely experiencing &#8220;extreme&#8221; drought. Drier conditions have also spread south into Kennebec and Waldo counties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 70% of the state continues to be classified in &#8220;severe&#8221; to &#8220;extreme&#8221; drought, according to the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/tech\/science\/environment\/us-drought-monitor-maine-drought-dry-conditions-rain-weather\/97-7dd6d4ce-20f6-4711-885e-745754085cd3\" class=\"cms__embed-related-story__link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. Drought Monitor: Most of Maine in &#8216;severe&#8217; to &#8216;extreme&#8217; drought<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/mema\/news\/maines-drought-task-force-convenes-drought-conditions-persist-fri-10032025-1200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)<\/a>, widespread reports show hundreds of residential wells have run dry, while stream and river levels have plunged to historic lows. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/news\/agriculture\/maine-drought-conditions-hay-season-farming\/97-b5ce1ba0-d2cc-49fe-9043-6e1f00bd5dfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Farms across Maine<\/a> report sharply reduced yields in potatoes, blueberries, and other key crops.<\/p>\n<p>MEMA director Pete Rogers called this past summer &#8220;one of the driest summers Maine has ever recorded,&#8221; adding, &#8220;Several streams and rivers are at record lows, farms are feeling significant impacts, and hundreds of households have reported dry wells.&#8221; The Maine Drought Task Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/news\/local\/maine-drought-task-force-meets-warns-possible-long-term-conditions\/97-7b2a4f09-3597-4ae1-b888-47fd9c013371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">convened on Oct. 2<\/a> to coordinate responses.<\/p>\n<p>Although some recent rainfall relieved moisture in topsoil, deeper groundwater and aquifers remain critically depleted, according to MEMA. That means communities, agriculture, and private wells remain at risk as fall and winter approach.<\/p>\n<p>To fully reverse the drought before soils freeze, the National Weather Service estimates that Maine would need about 150% of normal rainfall\u2014about six to 12 additional inches\u2014in the coming months.
