One pitcher who could be had for the right price is Skubal.

Even though Skubal is likely to win his second consecutive Cy Young Award, he will be a free agent after the 2026 season and was reportedly $200 million apart in contract talks with the Tigers last year. In Mets parlance, that means something like [Jonah] Tong, [Brandon] Sproat and prospect Jett Williams,” Sammon reports. “The Mets’ farm system ranks among the league’s best, but such a demand would significantly compromise its health. Perhaps it takes less or involves a major-league player or two; teams in recent years haven’t exactly received jaw-dropping returns for players entering their walk years.”

Skubal would instantly upgrade the Mets rotation and give them a true ace should they return to the postseason. It appears the Mets would not include McLean in a Skubal trade.

In 2025, Skubal finished second in the American League in strikeouts (241), led the AL in ERA (2.21), ERA+ (187) and bWAR (6.6), and topped all of baseball in WHIP (0.891), walks allowed per nine (1.5) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.3).

Related Headlines

[65
72017,1188,2120,37404,87208,43045,33987,363,1189,56394,32036,7686,99,89793,4706
post-234633","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mlb","tag-cy-young","tag-david-peterson","tag-detroit","tag-dylan-cease","tag-framber-valdez","tag-frankie-montas","tag-kodai-senga","tag-mlb","tag-new-york-mets","tag-nolan-mclean","tag-ranger-suarez","tag-sean-manaea","tag-sports","tag-starting-pitchers","tag-tarik-skubal
["GET
