LINDSBORG – A Maine and Florida resident, John Goff will present a guest lecture and slideshow titled “Growing Up Greenough” at the Sandzen Gallery (401 North First Street, Lindsborg, KS) on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00 pm.<\/p>\n
The talk will cover the family story of Charles Pelham Greenough III (1908-1983), who became one of the chief organizers and benefactors of the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg. <\/p>\n
It will trace Pelham\u2019s descent from many prominent old English and East Coast Greenoughs, along with his time growing up in Boston, Massachusetts. It also focuses on his aunt, Ethel Greenough Holmes (1879-1964) of Boston and Kansas City, and her association with the mobile, talented, and artistic Swedish American Birger, Alfrida, and Margaret Sandzen. <\/p>\n
\u201cAunt Ethel,\u201d as she became known among the family, was initially an art student of Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) before she introduced her nephew Pelham to Sandzen\u2019s daughter, Margaret (1909-1993). <\/p>\n
The presentation considers the growing and diverse art interests in both the Sandzen and Greenough families, as well as how these exceptional individuals helped Lindsborg become a distinguished art center.<\/p>\n
The presenter, John Goff, is a retired architect and historian. He is also the grandson of Barbara Greenough Bradley (1913-2002), Pelham Greenough\u2019s first cousin.<\/p>\n
The presentation is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
