(In fact, Deutsche Bank analysts said last month that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbresearch.com\/PROD\/RI-PROD\/PDFVIEWER.calias?pdfViewerPdfUrl=PROD0000000000604456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cAI bubble\u201d bubble<\/a> has already burst.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00023b6n2x7hpjyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps some corners of the internet are bored of the bubble talk. That\u2019s not making the market any less, um, bubbly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00033b6n9cxb7xoy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59baba74-c039-4fa7-9d63-b14f8b2bb9e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Financial Times<\/a> wrote that 10 AI startups \u2014 not a dollar in profit among them \u2014 have gained nearly $1 trillion in market value over the past 12 months. (That is, to use a technical term, bananas.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00043b6nuqyn6jq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even as Wall Street analysts and tech media increasingly question the hype, drawing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/07\/business\/openai-nvidia-bubble-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uneasy comparisons to the late 1990s<\/a>, the AI industry\u2019s response has been to shrug and watch their valuations tick higher and higher. The AI faithful believe the technology will disrupt (in a good way, hopefully!) virtually every aspect of modern life, from phone operating systems to pharmaceuticals to finance. And even if there is a bubble, proponents say, the dot-com bubble gave us companies like Amazon, and the internet became, well, the internet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00053b6na2uzpjex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are plenty of skeptics countering the AI hype machine, though few professional market analysts have done so as stridently as Julien Garran, a researcher and partner at the UK firm MacroStrategy Partnership.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00063b6nplvn7s8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Earlier this month, Garran published a report claiming that we are in \u201cthe biggest and most dangerous bubble the world has ever seen.\u201d Garran concludes that there is a \u201cmisallocation of capital in the US\u201d that makes the current frenzy 17 times bigger than the dot-com bubble and four times bigger than the 2008 real-estate bubble.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00073b6n1n1euqlm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That is, needless to say, a bold claim about a phenomenon that is famously hard to predict.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00083b6ndqwxfzrw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I sat down (virtually) with Garran earlier this week to talk bubbles and why he thinks the AI fervor is, to quote his report, not just \u201ca bit bad\u201d but rather \u201cthe antithesis of socio-economic progress.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00093b6njtw3hz4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000a3b6nidaib2fp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: Your latest AI report made a lot of waves among finance and tech media junkies like myself. Can you walk me through the top lines?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000b3b6noyuss12m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the heart of the note is a golden rule I\u2019ve developed, which is that if you use large language model AI to create an application or a service, it can never be commercial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtvdkxi001b3b6nja7v2qk9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the reasons is the way they were built. The original large language model AI was built using vectors to try and understand the statistical likelihood that words follow each other in the sentence. And while they\u2019re very clever, and it\u2019s a very good bit of engineering required to do it, they\u2019re also very limited.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000d3b6nyd3znclr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The second thing is the way LLMs were applied to coding. What they\u2019ve learned from \u2014 the coding that\u2019s out there, both in and outside the public domain \u2014 means that they\u2019re effectively showing you rote learned pieces of code. That\u2019s, again, going to be limited if you want to start developing new applications.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000e3b6nm1xenqkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the third set of problems, in terms of how it\u2019s built, is around the idea of scaling. There\u2019s a real problem at a certain point in terms of how much you have to spend to improve them. I\u2019d say it\u2019s definite that (developers) have hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/19\/business\/ai-chatgpt-nvidia-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a scaling wall<\/a>. Otherwise they\u2019d be releasing demonstrably better and better models each time they came to came to market with a new product. And since ChatGPT 4 came out in March of 2023, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/22\/business\/ai-vibe-shift-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">haven\u2019t actually raised<\/a> the bar significantly.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/shutterstock-editorial-15141178m.jpg\" alt=\"None of the AI companies have produced the \" killer=\"\" app=\"\" garran=\"\" says.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000h3b6ndxp1qv3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: What about the argument that ChatGPT, while not perfect, is capable of doing some low-level grunt work could increase productivity?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000i3b6nktub87i5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garran: There are certain bullsh*t jobs out there \u2014 some parts of management, consultancy, jobs where people don\u2019t check if you\u2019re getting it right or don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve got it right. So you can argue that you can replace bullsh*t with bullsh*t, and, yes, OK, I\u2019m prepared to accept that you probably can, but that doesn\u2019t really make it more broadly useful.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000j3b6niivxo51x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: So how should regular people think about all the huge sums of money churning through the industry?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000k3b6n0jathalv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garran: The AI ecosystem can\u2019t really sustain itself. You have Nvidia making a ton of money \u2026 Anybody else \u2014 the data centers, the the LLM developers, the software developers that use LLMs \u2014 they\u2019re all heavily loss-making.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000l3b6n5dz7erou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consequently, to maintain the process, you need to have a continued funding, which is why it looks like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/07\/business\/openai-nvidia-bubble-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">permanent funding tour.<\/a> But despite all of this, there\u2019s no obvious way that they actually turn this around to a profit. It\u2019s hope over realistic expectation \u2026 When you run out of investors, then the whole thing is going to roll over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000m3b6nulg0rrmm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: Are investors actually pulling back?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000n3b6nuc89wvrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garran: The amount of (venture capital) willingness to fund some of these startups, especially the software developers, is beginning to diminish because they\u2019re valued so highly. That leaves you with with basically SoftBank, which has had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/deals\/openai-softbank-investment-debt-51b4a130?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raise a lot of debt<\/a> against its shares to fund the first tranche of the OpenAI commitment that it made, and it\u2019s still got a bigger second tranche to fund.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000o3b6nhw8vghgc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You\u2019ve got foreign states like, say, Saudi Arabia. But there aren\u2019t many countries who have unlimited spending power. And that then leaves Nvidia as sort of last man standing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/shutterstock-editorial-13722431a.jpg\" alt=\"Large language models, Garran argues, can be impressive text predictors but are not the economy disruptors AI evangelists claim them to be.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1076\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000t3b6nbnpj1htz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: Are we in the process of deflating, or is the bubble still growing?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000u3b6namlfxvf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garran:  With AI, I can\u2019t say it\u2019s starting to deflate. We\u2019re just a week past all-time highs, so it\u2019d be kind of arrogant to say that was definitely the top. But it\u2019s certainly drawing closer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000w3b6nxuh2yogv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightcap: I have to ask, because I ask myself this all the time: What if you\u2019re wrong? What if the hype is real?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000x3b6n4y1h4vv0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garran:  Well, there are two ways I\u2019d be wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000y3b6nf1onksc7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One is, it just takes longer to break than I thought. Which, to be honest, it already has. And what happens if I\u2019m wrong in that way, is simply that they continue building things that aren\u2019t fundamentally useful to the economic society.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k000z3b6n7c2mu37w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If it carries on for another year or another two years because they managed to persuade someone to provide funding, the more people are doing stuff that\u2019s not going to make a return. The future is not going to be as bright. Future (gross domestic product) will be lower than it would be if they didn\u2019t do this stuff, and they just went about doing some mundane things that people actually valued.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00103b6neif4qvsk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if I\u2019m completely wrong\u2026 (and) someone could come up with \u201csuperintelligence,\u201d well, that completely changes the world, and we\u2019d be depending on whoever controlled the systems. We could be in a utopia of sorts, or we could be in \u201cBrave New World.\u201d Or we could be in a utopia like \u201cPlayer Piano,\u201d the Kurt Vonnegut book where everyone\u2019s employed, apart from some people living in their ivory towers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtuyq4k00113b6nyzocbtgx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To be honest, I think that is beyond our current capability as an industrial society to pull it off. If that starts changing, then I\u2019ll change my mind very quickly.
