The victory was the first March Madness win in school history.

In the following game, the Tribe was ultimately ousted from the tournament by No. 1-seeded University of Texas. However, the 2024-25 team still etched itself into Tribe Athletics history as the first William & Mary basketball team — men’s or women’s — to advance to the NCAA March Madness tournament.

Coach Erin Dickerson-Davis, who entered her third season as the head coach of Tribe women’s basketball in 2024, spoke during the ceremony. We wanted to believe in something bigger than ourselves; we wanted to set a standard. This day represents all the long days and late nights. It represents the tears, the laughs, and the moments that nobody else saw. It represents what it truly means to fall down seven times and get up eight. You showed the world what William & Mary basketball is all about. You made everybody watching believe in what we are about,” Dickerson-Davis said.

William & Mary President Katherine Rowe, with green and gold strands in her hair, also spoke during the ceremony, highlighting how this championship will continue to influence the players’ lives far beyond their time at William & Mary.

“Winning a championship is a very, very rare thing. And this victory is yours for always,” Rowe said. “You know what goes into this and you know what it took. You put that effort in, you took us there, you took each other there.
