After several months without transmitting her location, Serena finally surfaced long enough for her tracking device to send a signal.<\/p>\n<p>BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA \u2013 OCEARCH has announced the long-awaited resurfacing of Serena, an 11-foot, 700-pound adult female white shark that was tagged off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, in May. <\/p>\n<p>After several months without transmitting her location, Serena finally surfaced long enough for her tracking device to send a signal.<\/p>\n<p>According to OCEARCH Chief Scientist Dr. Harley Newton, most shark movement occurs below the ocean\u2019s surface, making it difficult for satellite tags to transmit consistently.<\/p>\n<p>This, he noted, is why researchers rely on multiple types of tags to understand better the complex migration patterns of these large marine predators.<\/p>\n<p>With only two recorded pings months apart, Serena\u2019s whereabouts during her time out of contact remain a mystery.
