{"id":23709,"date":"2025-07-20T12:05:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T12:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/23709\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T12:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T12:05:10","slug":"hands-on-with-alexa-pluss-ai-agent-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/23709\/","title":{"rendered":"Hands-on with Alexa Plus\u2019s AI agent features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy2 _17nnmdy0 _17nnmdy7 _17nnmdy5 _1xwtict1 _17nnmdyb\">One of the best features of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/619755\/amazon-alexa-ai-upgrade-artificial-intelligence-smart-assistant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon\u2019s new Alexa Plus<\/a> is that I don\u2019t have to \u201cspeak Alexa\u201d anymore. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/hands-on\/705808\/amazon-alexa-plus-first-look\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019ve been testing the voice assistant<\/a> for about a week now, and it understands what I say, regardless of how I say it \u2014 there\u2019s no more need for precise phrasing to get Alexa to do what I want. This big shift underpins another headline feature of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/devices\/new-alexa-tech-generative-artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revamped generative AI-powered assistant<\/a> that I\u2019ve been testing: agentic AI. But this one needs work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The idea is I can talk to Alexa Plus as I would to a real personal assistant and ask it to do tasks, such as reserving a restaurant for my friend\u2019s birthday, finding an electrician to fix my broken sprinkler pump, or booking tickets to a Chris Isaak concert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The assistant can then act as an \u201cAI agent\u201d and navigate online services on my behalf to book everything for me. Combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/devices\/new-alexa-top-features#:~:text=Manage%20your%20calendar%20and%20emails\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better calendar management<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/devices\/new-alexa-top-features#:~:text=Ask%20Alexa%2B%20to,saved%20that%20file.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ability to remember things<\/a> you tell it, Alexa\u2019s agentic AI has the potential to make the assistant much more useful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">Alexa\u2019s AI agent features are neither broad enough nor seamless enough to replace my real-life personal assistant: me<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">At least in theory. In reality, it\u2019s too limited. Alexa Plus relies on partnerships with specific services; it can\u2019t just roam the web and do my bidding. As of now, that includes Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, and Thumbtack. While impressively, Alexa did manage to complete several steps, overall, the AI agent\u2019s current features are neither broad enough nor seamless enough to replace my real-life personal assistant: me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Alexa Plus is still in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/639697\/amazon-alexa-plus-launch-early-access-missing-features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Early Access beta phase<\/a>, and Amazon says more integrations are coming soon. These include ordering groceries by voice (via \u201cseveral grocery providers in the US\u201d), delivery through Grubhub, and booking spa visits through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vagaro.com\/pro\/about-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vagaro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">These may be more useful to me, especially grocery ordering. I already use Alexa for my shopping list, but I then have to put everything into my Harris Teeter shopping app for pickup or delivery. After a dodgy start \u2014 when I asked about sports events and was told about a youth basketball training session \u2014 I tried again. \u201cWhat events are there in Charleston next month that you can buy me tickets for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Alexa produced a list of about 10 local sports events and concerts on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22839220\/amazon-echo-show-15-review-wall-mounted-alexa-tablet-kitchen-tv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Echo Show 15<\/a> I was using (Alexa Plus is much more useful on a screened device). It told me, \u201cYou\u2019ve got music shows like Blackberry Smoke and Mike Campbell on August 5th and Collective Soul on August 6th. There\u2019s also a Cure tribute band on August 2nd. Anything catch your interest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I spotted a Chris Isaak concert in the list (I love a good Wicked Game) and told it to book me tickets. It found balcony seats for $98.15 each and asked how many I wanted, while also showing me more expensive options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I selected the cheap seats, and it walked me through each step as it added them to my cart, ending with a checkout button where my credit card details were pre-populated. (I\u2019d linked my Ticketmaster account in the Alexa app when I first set up Alexa Plus.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I canceled before purchasing, because I don\u2019t love a Wicked Game $200 much, and Alexa confirmed that the tickets were released. However, alarmingly, later that day, a pop-up in the Alexa app told me that anyone with access to my Alexa devices can order tickets. I picked a French spot I\u2019d been to before and changed it up, asking Alexa to \u201cmake it for two weeks on Friday.\u201d Unfazed, Alexa understood, pivoted and confirmed availability for Friday, July 31st, at 7PM, then asked if I wanted to book. After I confirmed, it said it would also add the reservation to my linked Gmail calendar. Handy!<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">Alexa had messed up the date<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Or so I thought. I then received a text message from OpenTable, confirming my reservation for Thursday, July 31st. Alexa had messed up the date. I\u2019ve been meaning to get the circuit for my sprinkler pump fixed for ages. It\u2019s on the same one as my internet router, so when the pump kicks in, it trips the circuit \u2014 and down goes my Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">The big difference is that I did all of this hands-free<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I told Alexa I needed an electrician to fix the sprinkler system, and asked if it could book one. It pulled a list of several \u201chighly rated electricians\u201d in my area via <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thumbtack.com%2F%3Futm_medium%3Dcpc%26utm_source%3Dcma-google%26utm_campaign%3Ds-c-22284814287-174402829174-735242633684-kwd-41383190-b---9052825-g---%26gclsrc%3Daw.ds%26gad_source%3D1%26gad_campaignid%3D22284814287%26gbraid%3D0AAAAADv99bsCNo_TXoBsnmO15fPHrJka5%26gclid%3DCj0KCQjwhO3DBhDkARIsANxrhTqP1azJ8OD9JNx28c7ibn9lWeEzJMsq0Jt6dBwH603g4stq6UXxvWoaAty1EALw_wcB\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thumbtack<\/a>, highlighting the top three. I picked one and asked it to schedule a visit for a week from now. Alexa asked several follow-up questions about my house and the specific issue \u2014 it felt a bit like filling out a webform with my voice. Alexa, then said it was working on sending the request through the Thumbtack website, and that I\u2019d get updates soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">A few hours later, still no word from Alexa. But I received an email from Thumbtack (the first of many\u2026) and a text message from the electrician asking me to call or text to schedule an appointment. Not exactly the seamless set-it-and-forget-it experience I\u2019d hoped for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _17nnmdya _1xwtict1\">Still, the big difference is that I did all of this hands-free. I could be setting up dinner dates and finding electricians while cooking dinner or folding laundry. As a working mother of two, anything that helps with multitasking so I can complete my to-do list faster is welcome.
