This past August, we passed the three-year anniversary<\/a> of Warner Bros. Discovery cancelling\u00a0Batgirl as a tax write-off<\/a>. Since then, there\u2019s been no motion on reviving the film, but its directors<\/a> and stars<\/a> haven\u2019t lost hope luck will come their way.<\/p>\n

While doing press for his latest film\u00a0Maintenance Required,\u00a0actor Jacob Scipio\u2014who was to play Gotham mob boss Antony Bressi\u2014told The Direct<\/a> he thought the chances of\u00a0Batgirl\u2019s\u00a0return have slightly gone up in the wake of\u00a0Coyote vs. Acme\u2019s\u00a0similar cancellation and big screen revival<\/a> for August 2026. \u201cI got the chance to watch it, and it was a phenomenal film,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was great that they saved [Coyote]\u2026there\u2019s always hope. Hollywood\u2019s a funny place, and I think if enough people want it, it can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Batgirl\u2019s cancellation garnered a lot of bad press for WB from fans, press, and even led to several United States lawmakers contacting the Department of Justice<\/a> asking it to reconsider its approval of the WBD merger. There\u2019ve been plenty of high-profile cancellations since then, which further tarnished the studio\u2019s reputation with audiences and filmmakers up until fairly recently with hits like\u00a0Sinners\u00a0and\u00a0Weapons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Could Batgirl make a comeback, despite being apparently so \u201cunreleasable<\/a>\u201d it would\u2019ve damaged the DC brand? That\u2019s\u2026a little tricky; the biggest roadblock is Batman: Michael Keaton would\u2019ve played an older version of the character, similar to what he did for 2023\u2019s The Flash<\/a>, which WB seriously bet the farm on back then. Between the new DC Films universe and Matt Reeves\u2019 own cinematic world, he\u2019s a big question mark other adjacent movies are currently working around, which may not be possible here. Even so, it deserves a chance: like Scipio said,\u00a0Coyote\u2019s\u00a0getting a fair shake, so why not this?<\/p>\n
