a recent interview with Derek Futterman of Sports Media Watch<\/a>, Cowherd explained why he wouldn\u2019t fret too much about the lackluster ratings so far.<\/p>\n\u201cBarstool just started out, and I\u2019m prepping when they\u2019re on the air. I see what they look like, but Barstool\u2019s made their bones on digital and podcasting, so now they\u2019re transitioning to TV, and TV\u2019s hard,\u201d Cowherd said. \u201cAnd also on television, it\u2019s got to look the part, so TV, there\u2019s a lot of elements to it. It\u2019s, \u2018Does it look big?\u2019 For instance, [ESPN\u2019s] Get Up looks big. I could turn the sound down on\u00a0Get Up and the production quality, it looks big, so it takes a while to tweak all these shows. My look has been refined through the years, same with\u00a0First Things First.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo Barstool is brand new, and they\u2019ve already made some tweaks to it, and I think it\u2019ll be fine. The more Big Cat\u2019s on it, the better. He\u2019s obviously a big personality,\u201d the longtime FS1 host concluded.<\/p>\n
Cowherd might be getting to one of the problems with\u00a0Wake Up Barstool\u2018s format with his answer. Each day is a different cast of characters. The company\u2019s biggest stars, Dave Portnoy and Dan \u201cBig Cat\u201d Katz, only appear once per week. And while some of the show\u2019s regulars like T-Bob Herbert and Brandon Walker have come into their own,\u00a0Wake Up Barstool could certainly use a bigger dose of its superstars, as Cowherd suggests.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also important to acknowledge that the show has been a success in metrics outside of traditional ratings.\u00a0Wake Up Barstool\u2018s social engagement is undoubtedly higher than its predecessors on FS1, which is likely just as important to Fox Sports as linear ratings. Beyond the hard numbers, there\u2019s also a halo effect that Fox Sports enjoys simply by way of being associated with the Barstool brand.<\/p>\n
Eventually, if the morning show\u2019s ratings don\u2019t improve, could there be changes? Sure. Maybe Fox can convince Portnoy and Big Cat to appear more often. At least, that\u2019s what Colin Cowherd would suggest.
