Those figures show that the share of subprime auto loans that were 60 days or more past due hit a high of almost 6.5% in January and has remained close to that level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Fitch first released those findings earlier this year, the group noted that it was the highest since it began collecting that data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/loans\/2025\/late-car-payments-hit-highest-rate-in-more-than-30-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">in 1994<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NYT report adds that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/transportation\/2025\/car-repos-hit-levels-unseen-since-2008-financial-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">repossessions<\/a>\u00a0have also swelled, while drivers are increasingly trading in vehicles that are worth less than they owe, and lenders like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ally.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ally Financial<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CarMax<\/a>\u00a0are cautioning investors about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/earnings\/2025\/carmax-increases-loan-loss-provisions-amid-uncertain-economic-outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">loan performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite what seems to be \u2014 on the surface \u2014 a healthy economy, auto market weakness is one of the clearest signs that lower and middle-income families are struggling, the report added. And because many Americans need a car to get around, loan delinquencies serve as a reliable indicator of financial hardship, the NYT said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs this evidence that we have some consumers under stress?\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jonathansmoke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jonathan Smoke<\/a>, chief economist for research firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cox Automotive<\/a>. \u201cI would say yes, most definitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers are definitely under stress, as PYMNTS wrote earlier this month, after earnings from companies like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.delta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Delta Air Lines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.levi.com\/US\/en_US\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqQ1Y_rnO4QmV0OlE60_Hv951CHtPavIhow7iGZVqL22REHyDH4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Levi Strauss<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pepsico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">PepsiCo<\/a>\u00a0showed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/consumer-insights\/2025\/consumers-show-resilience-restraint-early-earnings-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">people are still spending<\/a>, but have gotten more discerning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by PYMNTS Intelligence from the report\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/study_posts\/why-paycheck-to-paycheck-consumers-cant-weather-a-2000-dollar-shock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Why Paycheck-to-Paycheck Consumers Can\u2019t Weather a $2,000 Shock<\/a>\u201d\u00a0reinforces those numbers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It found that the share of consumers living paycheck to paycheck remains high, with 68% of Americans in that position as of August. That\u2019s a number that leaves little margin for error when an unexpected expense lands on their doorway. The average household\u2019s liquid savings have dropped by more than 10% in the past 16 months, providing less of a cushion to withstand financial shocks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, there\u2019s still some breathing room. Recent Federal Reserve data shows consumers \u201cwho still have dry powder in the form of available credit but are using it judiciously as the year winds down,\u201d PYMNTS added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fed data also showed a 5.5% annualized contraction in revolving credit, a category that includes but is not limited to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/bnpl\/2025\/the-bnpl-story-everyones-getting-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">credit cards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese findings contextualize the cautious optimism voiced by Delta, Levi Strauss and PepsiCo executives,\u201d the report continued. \u201cDiscretionary categories are holding up only where consumers perceive clear, lasting value.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Car payments are becoming a hurdle for a growing number of lower-income Americans.
