Jill Duggar Dillard says she only recently found out what her grandfather was really like.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0Counting On star recently did an Instagram Live with her cousin\u00a0Amy Duggar\u2014 whose book\u00a0Holy Disruptor<\/a> was released last week\u2014 and the two discussed much of what Amy wrote about, including her exposure of some of their grandfather\u00a0Jimmy Lee Duggar\u2018s shocking secrets<\/a>. During the Live, Jill (who was joined on the Live by her husband Derick Dillard and Amy\u2019s husband\u00a0Dillion King) expressed how surprised she was to learn about some of the things her grandpa allegedly did.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The book is] definitely is deep,\u201d Jill said. \u201cLike, it goes into a lot of aspects [of the Duggar family]. It tells the whole truth and the reality of a lot of situations that our family lived, you know? Everyone is entitled to share their own story, whether we agree with them or not\u2026it\u2019s definitely a journey that she\u2019s been on and you can tell that through her book\u2026 [The book] was very insightful. We learned more about our family history than we knew.\u201d <\/p>\n

Derick\u2014 who read most of the book before Jill did\u2014 stated during the Live that he told Jill \u201cSome things about her grandfather she didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018Did you know this and that and the other about Grandpa Duggar?’\u201d Jill said, regarding the father of her dad, Jim Bob Duggar. My dad\u2019s dad? And I\u2019m like, \u2018No! Tell me more!\u2019 and he\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m literally telling you more about your grandfather than you knew.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learned more about our family history than we knew, we had inklings of things [that Grandpa Duggar had done],\u201d Jill added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"Jimmy Lee and Mary Duggar with a young Deanna and Jim Bob\u2026<\/p>\n

Amy revealed in her book that Jimmy Lee was a \u201cpredator\u201d<\/a> whom she was not allowed to be alone with. She also claimed that her grandfather nearly \u201cmurdered\u201d her mom, Deanna, after finding out Deanna wanted to move in with her boyfriend.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe grabbed her by the throat, carried her from the kitchen to his bed, and jumped on top of her,\u201d Amy wrote of the violent incident. \u201cHe wrapped his hands around her neck, lay on top of her so she was unable to move, and started strangling her.\u2026 He almost succeeded in murdering my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amy added that it was actually Jim Bob who \u201csaved her life that day\u201d by intervening between Deanna and Jimmy Lee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The book also goes into detail about how her mother and grandmother Mary (who died after an accident in 2019<\/a>) tried to keep Amy safe after she and Deanna moved in with Mary and Jimmy Lee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learned by the time we were in junior high to be very cautious around him,\u201d Amy wrote. \u201cI\u2019m not sure exactly when it happened or why, but eventually there were certain boundaries put in place by my mom and my grandma. There was a shift in our family where the things we thought were funny suddenly weren\u2019t funny anymore. Gramps had a crazy side, and we all knew it, but we didn\u2019t fully know yet his darker side.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the Live, Amy and Jill discussed how their Grandma Mary tried to keep her husband\u2019s dark side from being exposed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Grandma passed away with a lot of secrets, and that was the generation [where you] keep everything hidden and don\u2019t talk about it,\u201d Amy said. \u201cOur generation is more like, \u2018Let\u2019s heal from it and discuss it.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

They also talked about how Grandma Duggar\u2014 who was often featured on 19 Kids & Counting and \u2018Counting On\u2019\u2014 would feel about Amy exposing the Duggar Family secrets in their books.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that she had to live through, honestly, a lot of crap before she passed, too,\u201d Jill said of Mary. \u201cI don\u2019t think she would be super-vocal about [me writing my book Counting the Cost]\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think Grandma would like it,\u201d Amy added. \u201cGrandma and I were like best friends, almost like sisters. We were very, very close. She helped raise me. I think she\u2019d be like \u2018Amyyy!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cYou girls need to learn to keep your traps shut!\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Jill, Grandma Duggar was \u201cvery supportive\u201d of her and Derick doing mission work and even donated to their cause. However, she could be judgmental when her family members did things that she didn\u2019t approve of.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the family drama, she wanted to have her individual relationships with people [in her family]\u2026 She could lecture people pretty well if she wanted to!\u201d Jill said. \u201cWe knew when she was not happy with us or something but I didn\u2019t really get into any scuffles with her. I was always like, \u2018What\u2019s the point? I\u2019m not going to win her over on stuff.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously she kept a lot of things quiet for a very long time,\u201d Jill continued. \u201cBecause she didn\u2019t want to deal with it. So I think [her reaction to our tell-all books] would have been very similar. She would have not have wanted everything to be talked about at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans of \u201c19 Kids & Counting\u201d may remember Jimmy Lee Duggar, as he was featured on early episodes of the show. During one memorable episode that aired in 2009, Grandpa Duggar was wheeled out to celebrate his birthday (during an ice storm). He was barely conscious but was basically propped up on a desk chair so the Duggars could sing happy birthday to him.<\/p>\n

He died from brain cancer days after the episode was filmed in February 2009.\u00a0<\/p>\n
