{"id":241517,"date":"2025-10-21T17:34:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/241517\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T17:34:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:34:07","slug":"companies-could-have-profits-from-breaking-environment-laws-stripped-under-australian-reforms-australian-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/241517\/","title":{"rendered":"Companies could have profits from breaking environment laws stripped under Australian reforms | Australian politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Albanese government wants the power to strip companies of any financial gains made from breaking environment laws, as part of a package of landmark reforms to be put before parliament in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an interview with Guardian Australia, the environment minister, Murray Watt, also revealed he wants a definition of \u201cunacceptable impact\u201d to be part of the nation\u2019s new environment laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Watt said consultations with environment groups and industry had landed on the need for a \u201cclear, strong definition of an unacceptable impact\u201d, which would mean areas were protected and businesses wouldn\u2019t \u201cwaste their time\u201d in pursuing projects that would never be approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said several areas of contention on the laws \u2013 including how they deal with climate change and on the exact role of a new independent environment watchdog \u2013 were still to be finalised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But he said he remained \u201coptimistic\u201d the laws would be passed before Christmas, and was willing to make deals with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/coalition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coalition<\/a> or the Greens \u2013 or both \u2013 to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/oct\/17\/with-climate-trigger-axed-labor-wants-to-rush-new-environmental-laws-through-after-positive-talks-with-coalition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has reported that Watt<\/a> has been privately encouraging business groups to lobby the Coalition to support the legislation, sparking concerns among environment groups that protections could be weakened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Tuesday, Watt said penalties for breaking environmental laws would be increased under the proposed reforms, including a new rule \u201cto strip offenders of any financial advantage they gained from breaching environmental law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/mar\/10\/sign-up-for-the-clear-air-australia-environment-newsletter-with-adam-morton?CMP=copyembed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up to get climate and environment editor Adam Morton\u2019s Clear Air column as a free newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Penalties for significant breaches would be set at $1.6m for an individual, and up to $825m for a business, while a new \u201ccivil penalty formula\u201d would recoup any income offenders gained by a breach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A new EPA would also have the power to issue a \u201cstop work order\u201d to prevent environmental harm, Watt will announce on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Watt also said the government had not determined whether a minister would retain the right to make final decisions on major projects \u2013 a role that could be in the remit of a new independent Environmental Protection Authority. This came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/environment-minister-watt-to-retain-final-approval-on-major-projects-20251014-p5n2hb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it was reported<\/a> that he would remain the key decision-maker.<\/p>\n<p>Watt hopes his more than 80 meetings with stakeholders have built up enough goodwill to allow for compromise and agreement.
