The tool, dubbed ChatGPT Atlas, is out today. The company announced it in a livestream after teasing it earlier Tuesday via a mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OpenAI\/status\/1980650339037769799\" rel=\"nofollow\">video<\/a> of browser tabs on a white screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">ChatGPT Atlas is available \u201cglobally\u201d on macOS starting today, while access for Windows, iOS, and Android is \u201ccoming soon,\u201d per the company. But its \u201cagent mode\u201d is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users for now, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the livestream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cThe way that we hope people will use the internet in the future\u2026 the chat experience in a web browser can be a great analog,\u201d Altman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Besides Altman, the livestream featured OpenAI employees Will Ellsworth, who works on post-training research; Adam Fry, the product lead for ChatGPT Search; Ben Goodger, a staff member who in previous roles helped develop Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox; Ryan O\u2019Rouke, an interface designer; Justin Rushing, who previously worked at Apple; and Pranav Vishnu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Fry said one of the browser\u2019s best features is memory \u2014 making the browser \u201cmore personalized and more helpful to you,\u201d as well as an agent mode, meaning that \u201cin Atlas, ChatGPT can now take actions for you\u2026 It can help you book reservations or flights or even just edit a document that you\u2019re working on.\u201d Users can see and manage the browser\u2019s \u201cmemories\u201d in settings, employees said, as well as open incognito windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The browser\u2019s agent mode clearly builds on OpenAI\u2019s past forays into agentic AI, such as its Operator tool, an early version of a tool allowing ChatGPT to use a computer on a user\u2019s behalf, and ChatGPT Agent, the next iteration, which was designed to be able to complete more complex tasks, shop, and more (though it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/710020\/openai-review-test-new-release-chatgpt-agent-operator-deep-research-pro-200-subscription\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wasn\u2019t always successful<\/a> in that realm).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Whenever you click a link from a search result in Atlas, it\u2019ll by default show a split-screen with the webpage and the ChatGPT transcript, with the goal being to display a \u201ccompanion\u201d at all times, employees said, though a user can turn off the split-screen if they\u2019d rather. On the livestream, employees also demonstrated the browser\u2019s summarization features for webpages, as well as selecting text from an email and clicking a button to have ChatGPT tidy up the sentence in-line \u2014 the latter feature is called \u201ccursor chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cThis is just a great browser all-around \u2014 it\u2019s smooth, it\u2019s quick, it\u2019s really nice to use,\u201d Altman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The AI browser wars have been heating up for a while \u2014 OpenAI announced a prototype of its search engine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/25\/openai-announces-a-search-engine-called-searchgpt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dubbed SearchGPT<\/a>, all the way back in July 2024. But in recent months, AI-fueled browsers have felt like the latest frontier in AI hype.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This summer, Perplexity launched its buzzy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/703037\/perplexity-ai-web-browser-comet-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comet browser<\/a>, an AI-powered solution aiming to simplify the way people browse the web and complete tasks. Instead of a laundry list of Google Search results, you get a Perplexity \u201canswer engine,\u201d which offers a few links to relevant websites and generates an answer to your query.
