During the bear’s visit, the zoo says it did not appear aggressive. And at no point did the bear enter any animal habitats, the zoo said.

A black bear was spotted after he broke into a historic zoo in Northern California last week. (Sequoia Park Zoo)

“Our three bears are very distinctive in appearance, and I recognized right away that it was not one of ours,” says Christine Noel, Education Curation and Redwood Sky Walk inspector who made the initial observation. “Overall, he was a very polite visitor. He stayed on the boardwalk path and didn’t try to climb over the railings.”

After the bear briefly explored enrichment items around the night house, the animal was safely lured back into the woods through a service gate.

“He was really, really interested in our three bears, and he introduced himself to all of them through the fence,” Jim Campbell-Spickler, the zoo’s director, told SFGATE. “The interaction between them was really sweet, calm and curious. We think he was just looking for a friend, though maybe that’s anthropomorphizing, of course.”

It remains a mystery just how the bear was able to sneak in, since the perimeter fencing separating the Zoo from Sequoia Park is undamaged and secure.

“We will continue to monitor the situation,” zoo officials said. “Wild bears and other animals call Sequoia Park home, and we remind our guests to responsibly live alongside them by observing wildlife from a distance, staying on marked trails and always being aware of your surroundings.

Sequoia Park Zoo, which opened in 1907, is the oldest zoo in California.

EUREKA, CA — A wild black bear was found inside a century-old zoo in Northern California last week,…

[51
79,201
0":"post-242690","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-science","9":"tag-wildlife
["GET
