It seems like most of Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d album is recycled from old songs.<\/p>\n
The latest example? Fans are pointing out that \u201cElizabeth Taylor\u201d sounds just like the Backstreet Boys\u2019 1997 song, \u201cEverybody.\u201d It\u2019s obviously a direct rip off.<\/p>\n
Why? Because Swift\u2019s collaborator Max Martin recycled his old song to make the new one.<\/p>\n
Elizabeth Taylor, a total original in real life, is turning in her grave.
But most of the new Taylor Swift album is plagued by soundalikes from other songs.<\/p>\n
It was previously revealed that Swift cribbed the Jonas Brothers\u2019 \u201cCool\u201d for her title song, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl.\u201d Like, note for note.<\/p>\n
Fans heard it on the night the album was released.<\/p>\n
Is this sampling? \u201cInterpolating\u201d? Or just laziness. In the new Woody Allen novel, \u201cWhat\u2019s With Baum?\u201d a novelist is revealed to have plagiarized an out of print novel. He\u2019s immediately censored and the new book is pulped.<\/p>\n
But in the music publishing business, things aren\u2019t so clear. So what if Taylor Swift\u2019s music isn\u2019t original? Some of the songs she nicked are from the same music publisher, so they\u2019re not going to sue her. In Martin\u2019s case, he wrote both songs. So a curtain of silence is dropped, and no one complains.<\/p>\n
The fans know, however. And they\u2019re quick to post all over TikTok and YouTube. How utterly embarrassing.<\/p>\n
Swift is often compared to the holy trinity of female songwriters\u2013 Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Carole King. But I can\u2019t recall any of them being accused of recycling old songs for new material.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, The Backstreet Boys\u2019 AJ McLean posted on Instagram a video of himself mouthing the words over the Swift\u2019s song. He wrote:
\u201cCome on now you know one of us had to! \u201d<\/p>\n
