{"id":243263,"date":"2025-10-22T10:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T10:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/243263\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T10:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T10:17:10","slug":"if-we-dont-embrace-it-were-selling-ourselves-short","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/243263\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIf We Don\u2019t Embrace It, We\u2019re Selling Ourselves Short\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">There\u2019s no question that one of the biggest talking points during last week\u2019s Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show came out of Dead Space creator Glen Schofield\u2019s opening keynote address, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dead-space-creator-glen-schofield-thinks-the-games-industry-is-broken-beaten-and-battered\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regarding his plans to \u201cfix\u201d the industry in part via the use of generative AI in games development<\/a>. In addition to <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/i-can-save-you-30-40-million-on-the-idea-i-have-dead-space-creator-glen-schofield-already-making-calls-about-dead-space-4-now-ea-has-new-owners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speaking with Schofield<\/a>, IGN managed to get some time with another industry veteran, Meghan Morgan Juinio, to ask for her thoughts on the controversial practice that has previously been met with <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/call-of-duty-fans-give-black-ops-6s-zombie-santa-loading-screen-the-finger-amid-ai-slop-backlash\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anger from Call of Duty fans<\/a>, but also major support from games industry executives like <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/ea-says-ai-is-the-very-core-of-its-business-what-does-that-mean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EA CEO Andrew Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cI think if we don\u2019t embrace it, I think we\u2019re selling ourselves short,\u201d said Juinio, who recently vacated her role as director of product development at Santa Monica Studio after 10 years and two hugely successful God of War games. \u201cAI is a tool, and something that will augment us. At least for right now, that\u2019s how I see it. Here's how to play them in chronological order.\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressive-image jsx-2021719738 image aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9 jsx-2605834259 jsx-2338608387 hover-opacity\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Juinio went on to compare the use of generative AI to the procedurally-generated content that&#8217;s been a part of games development for decades now, pointing to SpeedTree \u2013 a tool for generating trees in real time \u2013 which was used as early as 2002 for the foliage in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. She also recalled a time when animators were pushing back against motion capture and the use of procedural generation to blend animation frames rather than key them by hand. Both procedurally generated assets and animations have long become standard practices in games development, and Juinio seems just as confident that generative AI will also find its place.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cPersonally, I\u2019m super positive,\u201d said Juinio. \u201cLike [Glen Schofield said in his keynote address], this is the next big technological advancement that\u2019s coming. In fact it\u2019s here already, and I think as leaders in the video game industry it is on us to figure out not just can we do it with AI, but should we? And it\u2019s a case-by-case type of decision making process and what&#8217;s true for game X might not be true next year for game Y.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">When asked if she thought the increasing adoption of generative AI might help mitigate the swelling costs of AAA-games development, Juinio was clear that the use of AI in games development is unlikely to be the be-all end-all solution to the post-pandemic pattern of regular studio closures and <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-blockbuster-games-bubble-has-burst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the bursting of the blockbuster game bubble<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t necessarily put it into an either\/or kind of scenario in that way, because to me the size and scale and beauty of the game isn\u2019t the main thing,\u201d said Juinio. \u201cAt its heart, the game [needs] to be fun. [Ideally] at its heart the story is fantastic, it\u2019s human, players connect to it, and it\u2019s fun to play.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cAnd yes it looks beautiful, and yes the music is immersive. But the music could be really immersive and the gameplay could be not good, or the story [might] not be engaging, and I don&#8217;t think it would resonate with players as much. And so at least for right now, I don&#8217;t see AI replacing the fun gameplay that is at the heart of a game like God of War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Although Juinio seems adament that generative AI in games development is here to stay, she also remains confident that it will never be able to rival the heart and soul that can only come from a human touch, and that the adoptance of AI will only be a positive if there&#8217;s an equal amount of investment made into developers to help them get the best results out of it.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cAt the end of the day you still need game developers to come up with the ideas,\u201d said Juinio. \u201cThe story of God of War is very much a human story that is based on human experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cAt least as of today, I don\u2019t see that going away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Earlier this month the makers of Battlefield 6 stated that there was currently no way to implement the use of generative AI into the daily work of its development team, despite <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/ea-exec-insists-players-wont-see-anything-made-by-very-seducing-generative-ai-in-battlefield-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regarding the burgeoning technology as \u201cvery seducing\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Indeed the debate over generative AI is bigger than in-game assets. At the start of October, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/nintendo-issues-official-statement-in-response-to-generative-ai-claim-as-openai-ceo-sam-altman-calls-sora-2-copyrighted-character-videos-interactive-fan-fiction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo issued a statement in response to claims around generative AI<\/a>, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman calling Sora 2 copyrighted character videos \u201cinteractive fan fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Tristan Ogilvie is a senior video editor at IGN&#8217;s Sydney office.
