A baby whale\u2019s inaugural cruise through Big Apple waters ended in tragedy over the weekend after its slashed and bloodied body beached<\/a> on the shores of New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The still-breathing behemoth suffered at least two excruciating nights trapped on a Long Beach Island sandbar before it succumbed to its injuries \u2014 just hours before rescuers planned to deliver a euthanasia injection.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur entire team is deeply saddened by every deceased animal that we investigate, but the ones that hit the hardest are animals like this young whale who never got the chance to contribute to their species,\u201d the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, based in Brigantine, wrote on Facebook Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n

The doomed juvenile humpback was first spotted off the coast of Holgate around 3 p.m. Friday \u2014 two weeks after marine research group Gotham Whale saw it struggling to hunt near Rockaway.<\/p>\n

The 29-foot-long animal was trapped in the shallow water and was clearly in rough shape.<\/p>\n

It was \u201clethargic and in very thin body condition,\u201d rescuers said, adding that it had \u201cwounds consistent with a previous propeller strike were present across both the left and right dorsal side of the whale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, beaching can be a death sentence for leviathans, whose organs become crushed under their own body weight without the buoyancy of water to support them. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear how long the baby humpback was on the LBI sandbar before it was spotted Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the medical assessment it was determined that the whale\u2019s prognosis was extremely poor and was unlikely to survive,\u201d the Marine Mammal Stranding Center wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision was made to humanely euthanize the whale to prevent further suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Mother Nature cruelly intervened \u2014 nightfall prevented rescuers from reaching the whale on the boat-only-accessible sandbar until Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Then, significant beach erosion from a nor\u2019easter earlier this month halted plans to relocate the dying animal onto the mainland, where rescuers could deliver the merciful elixir \u2014 a crucial step that prevents the euthanasia toxins from seeping into the environment or being passed on to other animals that would feed on the whale\u2019s carcass.<\/p>\n

Instead, rescuers slipped the baby leviathan sedatives to keep it comfortable until Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

By that time, however, the poor animal had passed away.<\/p>\n

The poor animal was apparently on its very first voyage through the New York Bight \u2014 the waters from Fire Island to the Manasquan Inlet in New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The juvenile was first spotted swimming in Big Apple waters on Oct. 2. NOAA Fisheries<\/p>\n

Gotham Whale cataloged the baby as NYC0476 on Oct. 2 and immediately noted that it was suffering from \u201csignificant trauma, showing injuries from either one or two propeller strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whale was spotted a second time two days later and then vanished.<\/p>\n

The slashes were across both its left and right dorsals and were in the process of healing, but were clearly affecting its ability to hunt \u2014 and the beast was noticeably skinnier than others in the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat body condition, the lack of that fat layer that\u2019s really important for these animals, means that this animal wasn\u2019t getting the nutrients that it needed,\u201d explained Chris St. Lawrence, of Gotham Whale,\u00a0who was aboard the American Princess with dozens of whale watchers when they happened upon the doomed humpback.<\/p>\n

The moment was emotional, with St. Lawrence describing it as \u201cdisheartening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really eye-opening moment for a lot of people. It\u2019s bringing these conservation issues into real life,\u201d St. Lawrence said. \u201cActually being able to show people what that looks like with an animal in its natural habitat can be really emotional and better help people connect the dots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whale sightings in Big Apple waters have been on the rise in recent years \u2014 but so have boat strikes. <\/p>\n

The fatal collisions reached a peak of 11 in 2023, the most recent year for which the data is available.<\/p>\n
