When CBS announced the cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert\u201d earlier this year, the network said the decision was \u201cpurely financial,\u201d<\/a> and has maintained that reasoning since. But fellow late night host Jimmy Kimmel still isn\u2019t buying it, saying on Wednesday that \u201cthere\u2019s no way\u201d Colbert is losing that much money.<\/p>\n

The ABC host appeared on SiriusXM\u2019s\u00a0\u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name\u201d podcast this week<\/a> and, while there, host Ted Danson asked him directly about Colbert\u2019s cancellation. Though Danson conceded that he should probably be asking Colbert directly, he was curious on what Kimmel knew about the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know for sure. But I do know, what I do know for sure, is that some of the information that has been released by the people who let him go can\u2019t possibly be true,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cThere\u2019s no way he\u2019s losing $40 million a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel guessed that the \u201creal story\u201d will never come out, but maintained that the numbers couldn\u2019t possibly have been that dire.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way it\u2019s even close to that. I know how the finances of late night television shows work and it\u2019s just ridiculous,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make any sense at all. So when you hear things that are obviously lies, you have to assume that there are more lies behind it, right? And that\u2019s what I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel alluded to this idea earlier this month<\/a> at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, when he discussed the budget of his own show, and argued that it didn\u2019t need to be so high.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they lost $40 million last year they would have sent everyone home already,\u201d Kimmel said at the time.<\/p>\n
