{"id":244461,"date":"2025-10-22T21:14:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T21:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/244461\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T21:14:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T21:14:09","slug":"mysterious-glow-detected-in-space-could-be-dark-matter-destroying-itself-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/244461\/","title":{"rendered":"Mysterious Glow Detected in Space Could Be Dark Matter Destroying Itself : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A strange gamma-ray glow emanating from the heart of the Milky Way could be the long-sought fingerprint of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73017\" data-postid=\"178019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dark matter<\/a> particles annihilating each other, evidence suggests.<\/p>\n<p>A new research effort involving simulations of Milky-Way-like galaxies shows that the mysterious, unexplained extra gamma radiation emanating from the region is equally likely to be due to dark matter annihilation as to millisecond  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/pulsar\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73051\" data-postid=\"178019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">pulsars<\/a> \u2013 and the dark matter hypothesis might even have a slight edge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dark matter dominates the Universe and holds galaxies together. It&#8217;s extremely consequential and we&#8217;re desperately thinking all the time of ideas as to how we could detect it,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2025\/10\/16\/mysterious-glow-in-milky-way-dark-matter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says astrophysicist Joseph Silk<\/a> of Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gamma rays, and specifically the excess light we&#8217;re observing at the center of our galaxy, could be our first clue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-new-spin-on-an-old-hypothesis-might-finally-explain-our-galaxy-core-s-weird-glow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Something&#8217;s Glowing at The Galactic Core, And We Could Be Closer to Solving The Mystery<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761167647_502_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>This gamma-ray glow, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galactic_Center_GeV_excess\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galactic Center GeV Excess<\/a> (GCE), has puzzled astronomers since <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.48550\/arXiv.0910.2998\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its discovery in 2009<\/a> in data from NASA&#8217;s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Something in the galactic center is producing a glow in the highest-energy form of light in the Universe, but whatever that something is, astronomers have yet to pin it down.<\/p>\n<p>There are two leading candidates. One of those is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter-is-once-again-a-likely-cause-of-the-strange-glow-in-the-galactic-center\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter<\/a>, the mysterious source of extra gravity hanging around the Universe that can&#8217;t be explained by the normal matter that makes up everything we can directly detect.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t know what dark matter is, but one hypothetical candidate is weakly interacting massive particles, or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weakly_interacting_massive_particle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WIMPs<\/a>. Scientists predict that when WIMPs and their antiparticles collide, they <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annihilation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">annihilate each other<\/a>, exploding in a shower of different particles, including gamma-ray photons.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/milky-way-gamma-ray-excess-millisecond-pulsars-dark-matter-fermi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other candidate<\/a> is millisecond pulsars. These are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-weighed-a-neutron-star-to-glimpse-the-strange-physics-inside\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neutron stars<\/a> at the very end of their life cycle, formed from the collapsed core of a massive star that has ejected most of its material in a supernova explosion. What makes a  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neutron-stars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73122\" data-postid=\"178019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">neutron star<\/a> a  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/pulsar\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73051\" data-postid=\"178019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">pulsar<\/a> is its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/astronomers-caught-this-pulsar-glitching-for-the-very-first-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extremely rapid spin<\/a>. As it spins, it emits beams of radio waves, particles, and radiation, including X-rays and gamma rays. As these beams sweep around, the pulsar appears to, well, pulse.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers have yet to detect the population of pulsars that could be responsible for the GCE, but there are ways to narrow down the possibilities. The population of old stars that should include pulsars in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-study-suggests-part-of-the-milky-way-is-much-older-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galactic bulge<\/a> \u2013 the central, bubble-shaped region of the Milky Way \u2013 seems to form an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/spaceimages\/details.php?id=pia20699\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X-shape<\/a>, while previous research suggests the Milky Way&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-milky-ways-halo-of-stars-isnt-the-neat-sphere-astronomers-expected-it-to-be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter halo<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/0954-3899\/41\/6\/063101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spherical<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These distributions would have different effects on the shape of the GCE. If the culprit is millisecond pulsars, the GCE should look <a href=\"https:\/\/scipost.org\/SciPostPhysProc.12.006\/pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boxy<\/a>, while a dark matter origin would produce a more spherical shape. Depending on the interpretation, Fermi data suggest that the GCE has a distinctly boxy distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Led by cosmologist Moorits Mihkel Muru of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam in Germany, the researchers wanted to know if this box shape conclusively rules out dark matter annihilation from the list of GCE candidates.<\/p>\n<p>They used supercomputers to run simulations of the evolutionary history of the Milky Way, mapping the density and distribution of the dark matter, and comparing it with the distribution of old stars used as a proxy for millisecond pulsars. Rather than modelling how annihilation increases over time, the team focused on the present-day dark-matter structure and its projected gamma-ray signal.<\/p>\n<p>The results of these simulations were all observed from a distance of about 8 kiloparsecs \u2013 the distance of the Solar System from the Milky Way&#8217;s center \u2013 so that they would appear as we would see them at our current observing position.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the dark matter halo likely isn&#8217;t perfectly round, but is slightly flattened as a result of the Milky Way&#8217;s long history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-map-charts-the-milky-way-s-dramatic-history-of-violence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mergers with other galaxies<\/a>. When projected onto sky maps of the Milky Way, this produces a boxy gamma-ray glow from dark matter annihilation.<\/p>\n<p>This suggests that a flattened shape is not necessarily diagnostic of millisecond pulsars, but equally could be the result of dark matter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761167648_940_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both hypotheses for the GCE, that of dark matter annihilations and millisecond pulsars, are equally plausible based on morphology, spectrum, and intensity, with perhaps a slight edge for the dark matter hypothesis on the last of these attributes in view of the observed deficiency in millisecond pulsars,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/g9qz-h8wd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the researchers write in their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp?utm_source=promo_launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mid-Article-Promo-Launch-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Mid Article Promo Launch\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177073 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to note that some observations have revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/milky-way-gamma-ray-excess-millisecond-pulsars-dark-matter-fermi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slightly uneven speckling<\/a> in the GCE, as expected from point sources such as millisecond pulsars. Dark matter annihilation would produce a smoother glow.
