In its current iteration, Mastodon<\/a> is touring with guitarist Nick Johnston in place of the late Brent Hinds, who tragically and unexpectedly lost his life in a motorcycle accident this past August. It\u2019s an unfortunate reason for anyone to join such a beloved band like Mastodon, but that\u2019s just the reality of things.<\/p>\n

Despite his use on the road, the band hasn\u2019t officially made Johnston a member just yet. But his contributions on the road won\u2019t be his only additions to the band, as guitarist Bill Kelliher revealed that Johnston will be featured in the band\u2019s next album. The detail came about during an interview with the\u00a0Sixty Scales And The Truth\u00a0podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019re kind of still in the writing process. Honestly, I\u2019ve been writing for the new record since Hushed And Grim. Even before Hushed And Grim was finished, I still had extra songs, and then I just keep writing more and more and more. So now we\u2019ve got, like, 20-some ideas. \u2018Cause I own a studio as well \u2014 not just the one in my basement, but I have a proper studio.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we\u2019ll demo the stuff at my house and we bring it to my studio with my engineer, and then we bring in Nick and Jo\u00e3o [\u2018Rasta\u2019 Nogueira], the keyboard player, and we start jamming the songs and say, \u2018You wanna add something? Please add whatever you want in here.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Kelliher said the album\u2019s been coming together pretty slowly this time around due to, well, extenuating circumstances with Hinds\u2019 vacant spot and the fact that they\u2019ve been touring pretty extensively as of late.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only been a slow kind of process because you take one song a day and you\u2019ve got 20 songs, it\u2019s taken 20 days and we\u2019ve been touring and we\u2019ve been busy. We\u2019re in a good place, though. I feel like the stuff that I\u2019ve written, mostly Brann and me, it\u2019s really good.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt still needs the touch of the other guys, but there\u2019s also these whole new songs that Nick is bringing in, like, \u2018Hey, I\u2019ve got this whole song.\u2019 I\u2019m, like, \u2018Okay, cool. This is great.\u2019 So it\u2019s a combination of both. It won\u2019t be until the next record, after this one, I think, where it really will be more of kind of more Nick being in there. He\u2019s gonna be in the new record, for sure, yes. But he\u2019s writing like crazy. I\u2019m writing like crazy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like a race. I don\u2019t know \u2014 not a race, and not a competition either \u2014 but we\u2019re just so full of energy. We just don\u2019t wanna get lost. I\u2019m, like, Let\u2019s concentrate on the songs that we have that we had before Nick joined and get those out with their help.\u2019 And then it\u2019ll be more of a cohesive, like, \u2018Oh, this is definitely\u2026 Part A is Nick and part B is Bill and part C is Brann and part D is Troy.\u2019 You know what I mean? It\u2019s a little lopsided still, because he\u2019s only just joined the band. But it\u2019s still gonna be fucking awesome. I\u2019m so excited. Everything that we\u2019ve been demoing is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the scheduling issues and everything that\u2019s gone on as of late, Kelliher said the band feels like it\u2019s in a good place. And that\u2019s mostly because now the guys in the band feel they can openly contribute tunes without someone getting a little unruly about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just feel like we\u2019ve been given a booster shot of adrenaline, like, \u2018Kaboom!\u2019 It\u2019s kind of a clean slate. Now we can really open our minds and really just kind of write whatever we feel like writing without worrying about what another person\u2019s gonna think. Because that was a real challenge for a long time, and now I feel like it\u2019s just like a new, fresh start.
