\n\tAlthough Robert Englund<\/a> has hung up his fedora and razor claws, the Nightmare on Elm Street<\/a> franchise could live on with another Freddy Krueger. <\/p>\n

\n\tChuck Russell<\/a>, co-writer\/director of A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/a> 3: Dream Warriors (1987), said that although Englund \u201cis the only Freddy\u201d to him, he has confidence that Jim Carrey<\/a> could pull off playing the killer after directing him in The Mask (1994).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJim, in my opinion, could almost do anything if he put his heart into it,\u201d he said on Dread Central\u2019s Development Hell<\/a> podcast. \u201cFor Jim to do it, we\u2019d have to do something that was another leap in the Elm Street series \u2014 a little bit like what Wes did with his very meta New Nightmare. I think Jim would only consider it, and I\u2019d only consider harnessing Jim, if there was a bold new direction for Elm Street.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2023, Englund said he\u2019s \u201ctoo old and thick to play Freddy now<\/a>\u201d after originating the role in the first 1984 slasher installment, adding: \u201cI just can\u2019t do fight scenes for more than one take anymore, I\u2019ve got a bad neck and bad back and arthritis in my right wrist. So I have to hang it up, but I would love to cameo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor told Variety at the time that he thought Kevin Bacon<\/a> \u201cwould be interesting\u201d as Freddy, explaining, \u201cI know he respects the genre, and he\u2019s such a fine physical actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Englund\u2019s last turn as the burned boogeyman in Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Jackie Earle Haley<\/a> took over the role in director Samuel Bayer\u2019s 2010 remake of Wes Craven<\/a>\u2018s original film.<\/p>\n
