\n\tHBO\u2019<\/a>s new horror series, \u201cIt: Welcome to Derry<\/a>,\u201d is not for the squeamish.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe eight-episode origin story of Pennywise (Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a>) takes place in 1962 and serves as a prequel to \u201cIt\u201d (2018) and its sequel \u201cIt: Chapter Two\u201d (2019).<\/p>\n

\n\tDirector Andy Muschietti<\/a>, who developed the project with his sister Barbara Muschietti<\/a> and writer and co-showrunner Jason Fuchs, says he didn\u2019t hold back when it came to loading each episode with as much gore, guts and blood as possible. \u201cI think the audience likes to be surprised, likes to be stimulated in ways that they weren\u2019t before,\u201d he told me at the \u201cWelcome to Derry\u201d <\/a>premiere on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank on Monday night, adding, \u201cWe did it more intensely in every aspect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBarbara said she was shocked the studio never pushed back on their plans. \u201cWhile we were shooting, I kept thinking, \u2018I\u2019m going to get the call,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cBut we kept on presenting these scenes and episodes and they kept on responding and loving them. We\u2019ve been very lucky to have the support from the studio.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTaylour Paige<\/a>, who plays a mom who has moved to Derry with her Army officer husband and their young son, said Barbara had warned her about watching the show because the actress gave birth just six months ago to her first baby. \u201cShe was like, \u2018You just had a baby, honey. Maybe take some time to watch it because those first few episodes\u2026\u2019\u201d Paige said. \u201cBut you know what? If you\u2019re gonna do it, do it \u2013 go all the way. It\u2019s a lot. It\u2019s crazy. And I had\u2026an unmedicated birth so I was in it. So yeah, it hit me a little more\u2026It was good that she warned me because I felt nauseous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOr, as Paige mouthed with a big smile, \u201cIt\u2019s fucked!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChris Chalk<\/a>, who plays an Army soldier in the series, said he didn\u2019t grasp the extent of the horror until watching the show. \u201cThere are things that you are going to see that are appropriately disgusting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tFuchs recalled his family watching the show. \u201cThey go, \u2018Is that what you had in that head of yours? That\u2019s what was going on when you were pounding away that scene on your laptop?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cYeah, but I think it is a show about the darkness inside all of us. Everyone\u2019s got the dark. Everyone\u2019s got the light. I may have more [darkness] than most, but in the case of show like this, it\u2019s certainly very helpful. We really wanted to push the boundaries in terms of the horror, the scares, the gores. It is ruthless. It doesn\u2019t pull any punches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, I did ask the Muschiettis for an update on their Batman<\/a> movie. Variety exclusively reported in 2023 that Andy was set to direct \u201cBatman: The Brave and the Bold\u201d for DC<\/a>. This Batman installment is separate from Matt Reeves\u2019 Caped Crusader franchise starring Robert Pattinson.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe intention is yes, but we can\u2019t talk about it,\u201d Barbara said when I asked if the film was still happening.<\/p>\n

\n\tAndy said, \u201cWe have to wait a few, a couple of months to start talking about it.\u201d But then he realized even that may have been too much information: \u201cI screwed it already.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt: Welcome to Derry\u201d\u00a0premieres on\u00a0HBO\u00a0on Oct. 26.<\/p>\n
