Starting Justin Fields, who has lost the faith of at least the team\u2019s owner, has not worked. Starting (and relieving) Tyrod Taylor has not worked.<\/p>\n

So for Week 8, the only winless team in the NFL will try something new under center: secrecy.<\/p>\n

The Jets are declining to reveal who will start at quarterback Sunday at Cincinnati in an attempt to make their opponent prepare for all possibilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to give [the Bengals] a competitive advantage when I have that opportunity,\u201d head coach Aaron Glenn said at practice, \u201cbut we\u2019ll have a quarterback.\u201d<\/p>\n

That much was about all that was clear Wednesday, when Fields and Taylor split reps and Fields said he had not been informed of the team\u2019s plan for this weekend.<\/p>\n

Glenn said he knows who will be his QB and insisted that decision belongs to him alone. The opinion of the team\u2019s owner \u2014 Woody Johnson essentially pinning the 0-7 season on Fields while speaking publicly Tuesday \u2014 does not influence or matter to the head coach, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s our owner, and he has a right to his opinion,\u201d said Glenn, who tried to spray the blame around to everyone, including a defense that took time to jell and a running game that has been stagnant. \u201cIt\u2019s really something that\u2019s been said across the board from everybody, including Justin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to improve, and we understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is no doubt that they need to improve the most at quarterback. Fields has been dreadful and regressing for a team that has not scored a touchdown in two straight games. <\/p>\n

The Jets are last in the NFL in passing yards. Among 32 qualified quarterbacks, Fields ranks 29th with a 31.8 QBR. In his past six quarters, he has not eclipsed 100 yards while completing 15 of 29 pass attempts.<\/p>\n

Glenn had stood behind Fields until last Sunday, when he pulled the former Bears first-rounder at halftime and brought in Taylor <\/a>during a loss to the Panthers. <\/p>\n

The offense was run more competently by the veteran backup, and it is possible Taylor can provide stability to a unit that needs it. <\/p>\n

But it is unlikely that Taylor \u2014 who also had started in Week 3 when Fields was out with a concussion and looked better during a 29-27 loss at Tampa Bay \u2014 makes a reeling team relevant and more unlikely that the 36-year-old makes a case to be a starter next season for the Jets. <\/p>\n

Additionally, there is a question of health regarding Taylor, who is day to day with a knee issue after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery during training camp. He did not look hobbled in the short amount of time reporters could watch practice Wednesday and was listed as a limited participant.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have all the confidence in the world in Justin,\u201d Glenn said. \u201cI have all the confidence in the world in Tyrod. I have all the confidence in Brady [Cook, the third-string rookie].\u201d<\/p>\n

There would be more to be learned by sticking with Fields \u2014 who had not performed in Chicago or Pittsburgh but who is 26 with a unique skill set with his legs and whom the Jets targeted this offseason, landing the former 11th-overall pick on a two-year, $40 million pact. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

A theoretical breakthrough would be meaningful for a team looking toward its future amid the bleak present.<\/p>\n

There is less to be learned by playing Taylor, but maybe an experienced NFL quarterback can help the Jets do what they have not done: Win a game (particularly against a beatable team, the 3-4 Bengals without Joe Burrow who have given up an NFL-worst 214 points).<\/p>\n

Amid so much focus on the Jets\u2019 quarterbacks, one of whom is under fire from his own team\u2019s owner, the head coach insisted the focus is on improvement everywhere and ignoring the rest.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spoken to the team about [Johnson\u2019s comments], but there are so many other things that we have to talk about,\u201d Glenn said. \u201cAgain, we\u2019re all on the same page and we know exactly what we have to do. \u2026 The thing that I\u2019ve been talking about is how we\u2019re going to win this game, and that\u2019s been the focus for us.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Starting Justin Fields, who has lost the faith of at least the team\u2019s owner, has not worked.
