A raccoon found in a backyard in Camden County earlier this month tested positive for rabies, according to officials. <\/p>\n
A Voorhees resident alerted the borough\u2019s animal control officer on Oct. 12 after seeing a raccoon in their backyard with their dog, officials said. <\/p>\n
The raccoon was taken to the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories which confirmed the raccoon had rabies Wednesday, officials said. <\/p>\n
The resident\u2019s dog was vaccinated for rabies, but must be under confinement and observation for four months, officials said. There were no human exposures, according to officials.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment,\u201d County Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Camden County Health Department, said. \u201cIf you have been bitten or scratched by a wild animal it is important that you seek immediate medical attention.\u201d<\/p>\n
County officials reminded residents to stay up to date on vaccinations and enjoy wild animals from afar. <\/p>\n
Residents were also reminded to keep their pets under supervision and to seek immediate veterinary treatment if bitten by a wild animal, officials said. <\/p>\n
