{"id":246052,"date":"2025-10-23T12:30:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T12:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/246052\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T12:30:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T12:30:07","slug":"englands-water-companies-get-worst-ever-score-over-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/246052\/","title":{"rendered":"England&#8217;s water companies get worst ever score over pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Thames Water spokesperson said: &#8220;Transforming Thames is a major programme of work that will take time; it will take at least a decade to achieve the scale of change required.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds acknowledged: &#8220;We are facing a water system failure that has left our infrastructure crumbling and sewage spilling into our rivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We are taking decisive action to fix it, including new powers to ban unfair bonuses, and swift financial penalties for environmental offences,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a foreword to the report, the EA&#8217;s chair, Alan Lovell, wrote: &#8220;Many companies tell us how focussed they are on environmental improvement. But the results are not visible in the data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The EA&#8217;s collective rating of the nine companies for 2024 was 19 stars &#8211; down from 25 stars in 2023. No year had previously got fewer than 22 stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Only Severn Trent got the top rating of four stars. All others got two stars &#8211; &#8220;requiring improvement&#8221; &#8211; except Thames which got one star for &#8220;poor&#8221; performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Thames Water &#8211; the UK&#8217;s largest water company &#8211; has become mired in financial trouble. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czxw2edxen9o\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported a loss of \u00a31.65bn for the year to March<\/a>, while its debt pile climbed to \u00a316.8bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We know we need to further improve for our customers, communities and the environment, and that is why we have embarked on the largest ever investment programme, delivering the biggest upgrade to our network in 150 years,&#8221; the Thames spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Every year since 2011 each of England&#8217;s nine water companies have been given a rating for their environmental performance. Only seven one-star ratings have ever been previously given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The EA says its assessment criteria has been tightened over time, so its ratings do &#8220;not mean performance has declined since 2011&#8221; and it had seen &#8220;some improvement&#8221; up to 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This year&#8217;s results are poor and must serve as a clear and urgent signal for change,&#8221; said Mr Lovell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a separate report on companies in England and Wales, the economic regulator Ofwat described performance across different measures as &#8220;mixed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It acknowledged progress in some areas like internal sewer flooding, but said &#8220;there remain areas where companies and the sector must do more&#8221;, including pollution and supply interruptions for some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In response, James Wallace, chief executive of campaign group River Action UK, said: &#8220;Today&#8217;s report shows that water companies in England and Wales are still underperforming, especially on serious pollution incidents, exposing the bankruptcy of the privatised water model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We urgently need a complete overhaul of this failed system to ensure that bill payers receive a fair service and that our rivers are properly protected from pollution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The EA attributed last year&#8217;s environmental performance to three factors \u2013 wet and stormy weather, long-standing underinvestment in infrastructure, and increased monitoring and inspection &#8220;bringing more failings to light&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">From 2027, the EA will replace its current star ratings with a new system \u2013 a scale from one to five, from &#8220;failing&#8221; to &#8220;excellent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government argues this will give a more accurate reflection of performance, with companies not able to achieve the top rating unless they &#8220;achieve the highest standards across the board&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Thames Water spokesperson said: &#8220;Transforming Thames is a major programme of work that will take time; it&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":246053,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[47],"tags":[192,79],"class_list":{"0":"post-246052","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/246052","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=246052"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/246052\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/246053"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=246052"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=246052"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=246052"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
