And any way you slice them, they\u2019re a nutrient-dense choice.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But some ways of eating apples are healthier than others\u2014how you prepare them and what you pair them with can change their impact on <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/blood-sugar-levels-8558395\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood sugar<\/a>, satiety, and nutrient absorption.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> We asked four dietitians for the healthiest ways to eat apples. Here\u2019s what they said.\n<\/p>\n<p>  1. Eat Them With the Skin On  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Peeling apples can remove flavors and textures that are less palatable to the taste buds. But it also removes a significant amount of fiber.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In fact, with its peel, an apple can contain over double the fiber of a peeled apple.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cApple skin contains both <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/soluble-fiber-8605235\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soluble and insoluble fiber<\/a>, greatly enhancing digestion and supporting healthy bowel movements,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oswalddigestiveclinic.com\/about\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcie Vaske, MS, LS, CNS<\/a>, gut health nutritionist with the Oswald Digestive Clinic, told Health.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Insoluble fiber in the skin improves stool bulk and overall regularity, she explained. Meanwhile, the soluble fiber pectin helps <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/foods-to-lower-cholesterol-8347635\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulate cholesterol<\/a> and blood sugar, reduces constipation, and helps you feel full, which can help with weight management, Vaske said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> You don\u2019t want to miss out on the antioxidants in apple peels, either. Peel-on apples contain more phytonutrients\u2014specifically flavonoids and <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/polyphenols-8707608\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polyphenols<\/a>\u2014than the flesh of the apple does.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> These antioxidants in apple peels may also have an anti-obesity effect, and according to Vaske, may protect against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/chronic-inflammation-how-to-know-if-you-have-it-8716462\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic inflammation<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>  2. Add Them to Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Apples make for an easy, nutritious snack\u2014but for even greater health benefits, it can be helpful to make them a more consistent part of your weekly diet.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For a balanced meal in the morning, pair these crunchy fruits with a source of protein and fat, <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritiondigested.com\/about\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amy Brownstein, MS, RD<\/a>, founder of Nutrition Digested, told Health.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She suggested grating unpeeled apples atop yogurt and granola, serving them with <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/nutrition\/is-oatmeal-healthy\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oatmeal<\/a>, or adding them to smoothies.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The fruit can be a part of healthy lunches and dinners too\u2014grain bowls and salads are a great vehicle for combining apples, protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cApples provide crunch, natural sweetness, and a boost of fiber and <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/nutrition\/what-are-antioxidants\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antioxidants<\/a>, increasing both the flavor and nutritional value of the dish,\u201d said Vaske.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> By mixing apples in with other foods, you\u2019ll reap their blood sugar benefits, too. \u201cApples can also stabilize blood glucose spikes when mixed with refined grains&#8221; such as white rice, Vaske said, thanks once again to their fiber content.\n<\/p>\n<p>  4. Sprinkle Them With Spices  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A quick sprinkle of spice atop apple slices enhances their flavor without adding sugar, calories, or fat.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cYou can have a different\u00a0experience each time you have an apple,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/simplestartnutrition.com\/?page_id=85\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Henigan, MS, RD, LDN<\/a>, co-founder of Simple Start Nutrition, told Health. For example, \u201ca lot of research on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/cinnamon-benefits-7546804\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cinnamon<\/a> shows it can be beneficial for blood sugar control,\u201d Henigan added.\n<\/p>\n<p>  5. Make Low-Sugar Apple Desserts  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_51-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Sweet apple treats like pies and pastries are undeniably appealing. Still, copious amounts of added sugar are a known detractor from health, increasing the risk of weight gain, heart disease, and <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/condition\/type-2-diabetes-overview\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_53-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Fortunately, not every apple dessert needs a ton of sugar to be satisfying and sweet, said Brownstein.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_55-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cApples may serve as an alternative to added sugars, given their natural sweetness,\u00a0crunch, and versatility,\u201d she told Health.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_57-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A few of her favorite lower-sugar dessert ideas: \u201cTurn apples into applesauce and cook down until caramelized for a rich treat. Or, thinly slice apples, dip in peanut butter, freeze, then dip in chocolate and freeze again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_61-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Not every apple-eating option wins the day. To \u201ckeep the doctor away,\u201d it may be best to steer clear of:\n<\/p>\n<p> Sweetened apple juices and applesauces. Consuming apples this way usually lowers fiber content and adds sugar.Apple desserts. Pies, pastries, and cakes that feature apples are better as an occasional treat, as they usually contain high amounts of added sugar and fat.High-calorie dips or extras. Overdoing it on peanut butter, cream cheese, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or other dips could make weight management harder.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_65-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> And, as great as apples are, make sure they\u2019re not the only fruit you\u2019re consistently eating\u2014dietary variety is crucial for health.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_68-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Apples are some of the healthiest whole foods around. To maximize their benefits, don\u2019t peel them, and enjoy their sweet, tangy crunch in food pairings with protein and good-for-you fats.
