Though they typically kept it light, The Beatles<\/a> and The Rolling Stones had a rivalry in their heyday that echoes in their respective fandoms to this day. There wasn\u2019t any major fueding, and they ultimately respected each other. However, there were a few occasions when their beef was taken seriously. There was one night when Paul McCartney purposefully attempted to upstage The Stones at their own party.<\/p>\n

The Night the Beatles Upstaged the Rolling Stones<\/p>\n

The Stones were gearing up to release Beggars Banquet in the late \u201960s when they hosted a party at a club owned by their friend, Tony Sanchez. The album played in its entirety for the a-list invitees. It was proving to be a rousing success until McCartney walked in. <\/p>\n

McCartney reportedly went up to Sanchez, who was in charge of the music, and nonchalantly handed over one of the greatest songs ever written, \u201cHey Jude.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHey Jude\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Paul walked in, everybody was leaping around to Beggars Banquet, which was far and away the best album of The Stones\u2019 career,\u201d Sanchez once said<\/a>. \u201cPaul discreetly handed me a record and said, \u2018See what you think of it, Tony. It\u2019s our new one.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI stuck the record on the sound system and the slow thundering build-up of \u2018Hey Jude\u2019 shook the club,\u201d he continued. \u201cI turned the record over, and we all heard John Lennon\u2019s nasal voice pumping out \u2018Revolution.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Though they didn\u2019t have the context we do of how successful \u201cHey Jude\u201d would become, everyone in attendance felt its power in the moment. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo there we all were, having a wonderful time, and in strolls Paul McCartney\u2014a little smile on his lips, hands behind his back,\u201d \u201960s icon Marianne Faithfull added elsewhere<\/a>. \u201c\u2018What have you got, Paul?\u2019 we cried out. \u2018Oh, nothing, really,\u2019 says he. [He then] put on Hey Jude. It was the first time anyone had heard it and we were all blown away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone was on board with the surprise single release, except Mick Jagger. \u201cWhen it was over, I noticed that Mick looked peeved,\u201d Sanchez added. \u201cThe Beatles had upstaged him.\u201d <\/p>\n

Beatles PR officer Tony Barrow said to that point elsewhere<\/a>, calling the move a \u201cwicked piece of promotional one-upmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that moment, Jagger felt the weight of the Beatles\u2019 songwriting. Though there was always a sense of healthy competition between the two bands, in Jagger\u2019s point of view, there was really no winning against the Beatles\u2014as evidenced by this night. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey were so big that to be competitive with them was impossible,\u201d Jagger once said<\/a>. \u201cThey were huge\u2026they were The Beatles.\u201d He continued, \u201cThey were this forerunning, breakthrough item, and that\u2019s hard to overestimate.\u201d<\/p>\n
