Washington County Historical Society\u2019s Local History Book Club will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, 5231 Route 67, Walloomsac, N.Y. Two battles took place there on August 16, 1777 between a contingent of Burgoyne\u2019s army under German General Baum and patriot forces under General John Stark. A tour of the site will be available after the session. Historical society membership is not required for the book club.<\/p>\n
Suggested reading includes The Revolutionary War in Bennington County by Richard B. Smith; STARK, The Life and Wars of John Stark by Richard and John Polhemus; or any other material about the battles in Walloomsac.<\/p>\n
Future sessions of the club will include books about the larger Adirondack area as well as works by local authors. Upcoming topics include; Charles Evans Hughes, NY governor; potato harvesting in Washington County; and Margaret Tilford, accused witch of Salem, N.Y.
