That’s it for our live coverage today on the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The day’s big headlines came from the fallout of the US sanctions on Russia announced yesterday.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin described the sanctions as an “unfriendly act” that doesn’t strengthen US-Russian relations, but insisted they wouldn’t affect Russia’s economy and that Russia will never bow to pressure from abroad.<\/p>\n

Dmitry Medvedev, Putin’s long-term ally, said that “talkative peacemaker'” Donald Trump had “now fully embarked on the warpath against Russia” with the sanctions.<\/p>\n

Rosneft and Lukoil, Russia’s two largest energy companies, were included in the sanctions.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the EU confirmed it had agreed its 19th sanctions package against Russia, targeting its shadow fleet and banning imports of liquefied natural gas.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelenskyy again pressed home Ukraine’s needs as he met with 27 other European leaders for the European Council summit in Brussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said Ukraine needed a reparations loan for the war in 2026 but was unsure if it was possible, while stressing that any kind of land swap with Russia as a means of achieving peace in the conflict was “unacceptable”.<\/p>\n

But Zelenskyy also told our Europe correspondent Siobhan Robbins<\/a> that he believed a ceasefire with Russia was “still possible”.<\/p>\n

A key feature of talks was proposals to use frozen Russian assets, held by Belgium, to fund its war effort.<\/p>\n

While it as mentioned many times by leaders during the summit, the EU stopped short of committing to the idea in its written conclusions, instead insisting Russia\u2019s assets should “remain immobilised”.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, NATO member Lithuania has said two Russian military aircraft had violated its airspace, with NATO jets scrambled in response to the incident.<\/p>\n

But Russia’s defence ministry appeared to indirectly deny the claims when it said its fighter jets carried out a “training flight” over Russia’s Kaliningrad region and did not violate the borders of any other country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That’s it for our live coverage today on the war in Ukraine.
