{"id":247736,"date":"2025-10-24T04:35:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T04:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/247736\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T04:35:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T04:35:20","slug":"people-are-going-to-get-their-nobel-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/247736\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;People are going to get their Nobel Prize&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Materials scientists at Stony Brook University in New York are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d42473-025-00012-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:developing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">developing<\/a> increasingly resilient nuclear reactors designed to conduct fission and fusion reactions even under severe radiation and high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the journal Nature, high-performance structural materials are essential to the integrity and efficiency of any reactor, and most nuclear technologies must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d42473-025-00012-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:survive;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">survive<\/a> temperatures over 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,832 degrees Fahrenheit) as well as considerable radiation damage. After all, both fission \u2014 splitting atoms to release energy \u2014 and fusion \u2014 merging atoms together to produce heat \u2014 can prove volatile processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Accordingly, the researchers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d42473-025-00012-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:using;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">using<\/a> temperature-resistant ceramics and tungsten alloys in the materials they engineer, in order to protect the reactor from radiation-incurred physical deformity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tungsten alloys, specifically, provide &#8220;grain boundaries [that] serve as sinks for radiation defects,&#8221; per Nature. Meanwhile, constructing neutron moderators from ceramic \u2014 which in turn is composed of elements that excel in neutron capture \u2014 may help minimize the hazardous waste output that comes with neutron interaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The researchers are also working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d42473-025-00012-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:refine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">refine<\/a> nuclear fuel production, aiming for safer ways to channel uranium into the nuclear fission process and more efficient options for nuclear fusion \u2014 with an emphasis on the latter. If all goes well, we could see a first-of-its-kind full-scale fusion plant up and running in less than 15 years, per Nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;On paper, the engineering is solid. And I can tell you the materials are amazing,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d42473-025-00012-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:remarked;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">remarked<\/a> David Sprouster of Stony Brook University&#8217;s Engineered Microstructures and Radiation Effects Laboratory. &#8220;But how it all comes together, actually demonstrating the net energy gain, that&#8217;s where people are going to get their Nobel Prize.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As our growing world population and the emergence of energy-intensive industries such as AI drive up global energy demand \u2014 and the planet-warming carbon pollution released in meeting it increases \u2014 swapping out dirty fuels like coal and oil for cleaner alternatives becomes increasingly essential. While options like solar and wind power can make a difference, considering the level of commercialization they&#8217;ve achieved already, the natural factors they rely on aren&#8217;t the most stable or predictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Besides, nuclear technology generates massive amounts of energy within a single reaction \u2014 far more than most other low-carbon solutions out there.
