He was living in New York City and working at a nonprofit when the city was devastated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/28\/us\/gallery\/superstorm-sandy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Superstorm Sandy<\/a> in 2012. Stuck in his small Queens apartment, the self-described \u201cnews junkie\u201d spent long stretches online, falling into internet wormholes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgyra5vp00053b6ne995b1zt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At some point, he says, he came across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/20\/us\/westboro-church-founder-dead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Westboro Baptist Church<\/a> (WBC).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00153b6nif38l2u0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Church, which is considered a hate group by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/resources\/extremist-files\/westboro-baptist-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>, is best known for organizing pickets at soldiers\u2019 funerals and emblazoning anti-LGBT slogans on protest signs and billboards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00163b6nd8laicxf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe first thing I saw was that (the church) was in a neighborhood. I was walking around and I decided to do a 360 view and I saw a \u2018for sale\u2019 sign in front of the house on Google Earth. I thought it would be really funny to buy that house.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00173b6ns3adfref@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although that specific house in Topeka, Kansas, was no longer for sale when Jackson inquired, another one on the street was. Jackson bought it sight unseen. Despite never having been there, he was ready for a change, so he moved to his new digs in Topeka, the state capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqo0na00003b6n5urnuj0c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But becoming the WBC\u2019s neighbor was only the first step in his plan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00183b6nagsb4jij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Next, he painted the house\u2019s exterior in rainbow stripes to make it look like a Pride flag. The act was intentional, agitprop for the social media age. It was a response to the the church\u2019s anti-gay rhetoric, and it was right in front of their living room windows, impossible to ignore.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00193b6nwjxluejg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He named it the Equality House.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001a3b6nn8fab4q7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Photos of the home went viral, but Jackson thought people would see a picture, have a laugh, and then move on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001b3b6naih8r2hd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, they showed up to visit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001c3b6nodkov22b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although Topeka has a population of about 125,000 people, its location along I-70, a major highway that cuts east-west across the US, makes it a convenient stop along road trips. The Westboro Baptist Church, and the Equality House, are just off the highway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001d3b6nfktjfd90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few years later, Jackson bought a second home on the street and painted it in pink, white and blue stripes to resemble the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/19\/travel\/yosemite-park-ranger-fired-transgender-flag-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trans pride flag<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtq358h00003b6nc6p7t3re@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jackson doesn\u2019t call the Equality House a \u201cspite\u201d house, but he knows that a lot of people disagree. The house is part of a wider nonprofit he\u2019s established called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantingpeace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Planting Peace,<\/a> which has launched other initiatives including orphanages and elephant rescue efforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh1zbpyi00003b6nd9m56ki5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Equality House is a symbol of compassion, peace, and positive change,\u201d the organization\u2019s website says. But its location, facing the infamous church, makes a case for its \u201cspite\u201d house label.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ap21225804143688.jpg\" alt=\"Number 44 Hull Street is so narrow that residents have to enter from the side.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1066\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001g3b6nslw1vy95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spite architecture has a short but vivid history, most of it American.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgtqgaks00023b6nxpyqxhic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s sometimes mistakenly linked to \u201cnail\u201d houses, where owners refuse to sell to developers, leaving a single structure marooned amid new constructions. Sometimes owners are holding out for a bigger payday. Others stay put out of stubbornness \u2014 think of the little house at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/01\/entertainment\/purple-rain-house-airbnb-icons-experiences\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beginning of the movie \u201cUp.\u201d<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001h3b6np9obmlxn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But spite houses are different. They\u2019re built not to resist developers but, as their name suggests, they\u2019re intentionally designed, with a degree of malice, to annoy someone specific.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001i3b6n3x02itdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Boston\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/boston-skinny-house-sold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Skinny House<\/a>\u201d may be the most famous example.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001j3b6nol44lceu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ten feet wide and four stories tall, it rises from the city\u2019s historic North End. According to a real estate agent who once sold it, two brothers owned the plot. One built a grand home for himself while the other was away fighting in the Civil War. When the soldier returned, furious that his brother had left him a smaller portion of the plot, he built a narrow tower to block the mansion\u2019s view and sunlight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001l3b6nirj176ds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, a plaque outside the diminutive 44 Hull Street property reads \u201cSkinny House,\u201d with \u201cSpite House\u201d in parentheses. Although it\u2019s still a private residence, it has become a tourist attraction in the tony Boston neighborhood, which also contains the Old North Church, the city\u2019s oldest, and a statue of Paul Revere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgyrip7c000c3b6nh62scvek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Google Maps, it\u2019s labeled \u201cBoston spite house.\u201d Instagram is full of photos of tourists visiting the house, with \u201cstretching my arms out between this house and the one next door\u201d by far the most popular pose.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001m3b6nnlid2j7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spite is one thing. Prime location is another. Despite its dimensions and the regular parade of visitors outside, the home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/home\/famous-skinny-house-boston-sale-1-2-million-see-inside-t227963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sold for $1.25 million<\/a> in 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001n3b6nrlmq11t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While spite houses aren\u2019t an exclusively American phenomenon, they do flourish in the United States. The mix of private-property culture, individualism, and the country\u2019s fragmented zoning laws creates ideal conditions for personal grudges to solidify into real estate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001o3b6n2kdh1tt6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHostile architecture is very American,\u201d says Paavo Monkkonen, assistant professor in the University of California, Los Angeles\u2019 Department of Urban Planning. \u201cYour house represents more here than it does in other countries. It\u2019s a more personal symbol because it\u2019s a home ownership society. There\u2019s more neighbor-to-neighbor conflict.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001p3b6n3unrvkdb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spite houses are a kind of hostile architecture, but usually on a local scale \u2014built for the irritation of a particular person or family. Broader \u201chostile architecture\u201d includes things like uncomfortable park benches meant to keep homeless people from sleeping on them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001q3b6nm4hbqol1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe US approach to urban design is often not people-centric,\u201d says Monkkonen. \u201cIn the sense that in certain parts of the city you want to build things that no one will go to, plazas that will be empty, because you want to protect your own peace and quiet.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001r3b6ni5ga8qfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are spite houses outside of the US, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001s3b6nma8wihgg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sarajevo\u2019s Inat Ku\u0107a, or House of Resentment, offers a Balkan version of the genre.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001t3b6ncsh2vfes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 1800s, Austro-Hungarian authorities wanted to demolish homes alongside the Miljacka River to make room for a new city hall. One homeowner refused to sell. The eventual compromise saw the government move his house, brick-by-brick, and rebuild it in the opposite river bank.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001u3b6nv6awktoz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, the structure is home to a traditional Bosnian restaurant, but to locals it will always be the House of Spite or House of Contempt \u2013 a moment of David defeating Goliath, and a symbol of Bosnian pride.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/khjfcp.jpg\" alt=\"The Hess Triangle is on 7th Avenue South in Greenwich Village.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001v3b6n59x13yjq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And it doesn\u2019t have to be a full-on house of spite to get visitors interested in stopping by.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001w3b6nli0036vd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In New York City\u2019s West Village, one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the United States, a small, easily missed corner of pavement has become an unlikely tourist attraction.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001x3b6noj8dmjpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This isn\u2019t just any old piece of Manhattan asphalt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001y3b6nlup9o9s3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 500-square-inch triangle carries an all-caps message: \u201cPROPERTY OF THE HESS ESTATE WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN DEDICATED FOR PUBLIC PURPOSES.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz001z3b6njcmbytj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Officially, it\u2019s called the Hess Triangle. Unofficially, it\u2019s the \u201cspite triangle.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00203b6nl16a11nb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Its existence began as a beef between the Hess family \u2014 German immigrants who owned large plots of land in this part of Manhattan \u2014 and the city, which seized most of their land in the early 1900s to build the subway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00213b6n4idsjbv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When a survey showed the city\u2019s measurements of the land were slightly off, the family refused to surrender the remaining two-foot sliver. Instead they tiled their protest into the ground.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00223b6ntmuvne8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The appearance of the spite triangle made headlines in July 1922, with the New York Times giving it an aptly<a href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1922\/07\/27\/99045052.html?pageNumber=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> small amount of newspaper real estate<\/a> .\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00233b6nk926mqoq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Aaron Jackson\u2019s Equality House project, going viral had pros and cons. He was happy that the wave of attention got people to learn about Westboro Baptist Church and educate themselves on LGBT issues.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00243b6nhqhv8e8f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, it got to the point that he no longer wanted to live in the house day-to-day. Instead, Jackson is converting the home into a museum and library so that people who visit can do more than just take a picture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00253b6neso8821z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some guests, Jackson says, want to show support when they visit the Equality House. Others want to argue. Some consider it a spite house, while others think it\u2019s an activist experiment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgsqrsnz00263b6n0hlvvn5y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt the end of the day,\u201d says Jackson, \u201cit\u2019s an art project.
