Sometimes, even that&#8217;s enough excitement. Just the smallest glimpse of one of the world&#8217;s largest species. There&#8217;s something powerful about feeling that small and insignificant.<\/p>\n<p>On August 13, 2022 however, folks in New York City got the <a data-linked-post=\"2659082036\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/whale-watchers-witness-incredible-birth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">whale watching cruise<\/a> of a lifetime as they were able to witness not one, not two, but NINE whales swimming in the harbor. An incredibly rare sight, at the time.<\/p>\n<p>While onboard a tour with <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/APCruises\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">American Princess Cruises<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/ackerman_celia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Celia Ackerman<\/a>, who works as a naturalist for the company, captured multiple breathtaking photos of the creatures with a view of New York\u2019s skyline as the backdrop.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s just one of the beauties:<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"ee7df\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"34cb95814e0bb8cd895922ec94b0ee51\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201457%201200'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761322208_14_img.jpg\" width=\"1457\" height=\"1200\" alt=\"whales, whale watching, animals, conservation, new york, ocean, wildlife, photography\"\/> Gorgeous             all images taken by Cecilia Ackerman, used with permission from Gotham Whales         <\/p>\n<p>Ackerman is also a research associate for <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/gothamwhale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gotham Whale<\/a>, a marine mammal research, education and advocacy organization. Gotham Whale tweeted the images not only to let others join in on nature\u2019s spectacle, but also to <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/gothamwhale\/status\/1559353415796510722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raise awareness and avoid potential collisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazing day to say the least,\u201d Gotham Whale\u2019s caption read.<\/p>\n<p>This once-in-a-lifetime sighting might be less of a miracle and more a result of concerted efforts to clean New York\u2019s waters. Back in 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/08\/10\/why-new-york-harbor-is-the-cleanest-its-been-in-110-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Post<\/a> cited a study that showed New York\u2019s harbors were the purest they\u2019ve been in nearly 110 years, not since \u201cAlbert Einstein had just published his theory of relativity,\u201d according to the Post article. This was largely due to the Clean Water Act of 1972, in addition to volunteer environmental groups, according to the article.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaner water means more fish, and more fish means a whale buffet. Celia Ackerman         <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething else to make your heart happy!\u201d someone commented alongside a blue whale emoji.<\/p>\n<p>Humpback whales, in particular, are an amazing conservation success story. In the 1940s, when whaling oversight first began, humpbacks were nearly extinct. Celia Ackerman         <\/p>\n<p>This is the stuff fairy tales are made of y&#8217;all.<\/p>\n<p>Whales used to pass through New York harbor on their way to more fertile feeding grounds, but the water cleanup efforts have motivated them to stick around and feed. Celia Ackerman         <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s even a video of three breaching whales from the same day, shared by science and health reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/aarontremper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aaron Tremper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would\u2019ve been screaming. This is so magical!\u201d wrote one person.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the new-and-improved coastline (and all the fish that comes with it) is not only attracting whales. On August 8, 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/sharks-rip-currents-nyc-beach\/12109939\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">two sharks<\/a> were spotted off a beach in Queens, New York. And there were 15 shark sightings in one day the previous week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/sharks-rip-currents-nyc-beach\/12109939\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ABC7 New York<\/a>. However, shark attacks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trackingsharks.com\/2022-shark-attack-map\/#:~:text=16%2C%20there%20have%20been%2059,provoked)%20publicly%20reported%20and%20verified.\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">still quite rare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I know what you\u2019re thinking\u2014where are the dolphins?! Don\u2019t worry, Ackerman found some of those, too.<\/p>\n<p>Like this Clymene dolphin below, whose most well-known party trick is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/clymene-dolphin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">spinning while jumping out of the water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"6d3bc\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"eb7aa8cb4453349ac5bab57fc7260d2e\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202051%201596'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761322209_863_img.jpg\" width=\"2051\" height=\"1596\" alt=\"whales, whale watching, animals, conservation, new york, ocean, wildlife, photography\"\/> He&#8217;s auditioning for the &#8220;Flipper&#8221; reboot.             Celia Ackerman         <\/p>\n<p>These images come as a respite after the news that Freya, a walrus in Norway who captured hearts by sunbathing in various boats, was euthanized by authorities after being declared a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/norway-euthanizes-freya-walrus-rose-fame-sinking-boats-rcna43025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">threat to human safety<\/a>.\u201d Her death was considered by many to be an avoidable act of cruelty, brought on by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/freya-walrus-euthanized-norway-outrage-rcna43073\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">human negligence<\/a>. However, the walrus named after a Norse goddess of love aptly still commands reverence by her followers, who have started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/norwegian-residents-create-fundraiser-for-famed-walrus-freya\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">fundraiser to erect a statue<\/a> in her honor.<\/p>\n<p>Since these photos surfaced in 2022, the whale population in New York has continued to grow. Now, it&#8217;s so big that officials are growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/sep\/23\/new-york-whales-shipping-bight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">worried over whale-ship collisions<\/a>. The next step, after cleaning up the waters, may be to implement lower speed limits on passing vessels. One step at a time.
