Lovato unveiled her ninth studio album and first pop album since 2021, It\u2019s Not That Deep, on Friday. She\u2019s nearly four years out of the pop game, but Lovato\u2019s homecoming is bright and assured. Tracks like \u201cFast\u201d and \u201cLittle Bit\u201d hark back to the club-going energy Lovato radiated on \u201cCool for the Summer<\/a>,\u201d when she had the genre wrapped around her finger.<\/p>\n Where It\u2019s Not That Deep differs from Lovato\u2019s previous works is in its inherently carefree ethos. Lovato isn\u2019t just singing about having fun \u2014 she\u2019s actually having it.<\/p>\n \u201cThis album era has been such a joyful and fun time in my life. i really feel like i\u2019m exactly where i\u2019m supposed to be. every piece of this world was created with so much love,\u201d Lovato wrote on Instagram<\/a> following the album\u2019s midnight release. \u201cfrom set to the studio, i\u2019ve enjoyed every moment of this process and i hope you can feel it when you listen. i\u2019m so glad it\u2019s finally yours to laugh, dance, and even cry to (because let\u2019s be real, i had to get a little deep).\u201d<\/p>\n Lovato also dropped the live music video of \u201cLet You Go,\u201d<\/a> the fourth track on It\u2019s Not That Deep, at 4 a.m. ET on album release day.<\/p>\n Fans will recall that nearly four years ago, Lovato sent her inner pop star six feet under, holding a \u201cfuneral\u201d to commemorate the death of that musical era. In January 2022, the Camp Rock alum, clad in all black, hosted \u201ca funeral for my pop music\u201d with executives from Island Records, including her then-manager Scooter Braun. She went on to release Holy Fvck in 2022, followed by Revamped in 2023, before pivoting back to her pop-centric roots.<\/p>\n \u201cMy pop music coming back to life after we had a funeral for it,\u201d reads text on a video Lovato posted<\/a> to TikTok on July 21.<\/p>\n Ten days later, Lovato dropped \u201cFast,\u201d her dance-pop single<\/a> and first solo release in three years. \u201cHere All Night,\u201d an uptempo breakup track, was released in mid-September, followed by her latest, EDM-heavy single, \u201cKiss,\u201d which debuted earlier this month.<\/p>\n With It\u2019s Not That Deep, Lovato seems to embrace the nostalgia of her past and channel it in a way that serves who she is in this moment. There\u2019s a cool, commanding nonchalance that\u2019s steady throughout, and it\u2019s especially evident on tracks like \u201cFrequency,\u201d where she repeatedly vows to \u201cf*** up the vibe,\u201d and \u201cSay It,\u201d on which she\u2019s unapologetic in her desire for validation.<\/p>\n Still, the album lends itself to moments of introspection without sacrificing its free-flowing, electro-heavy energy. On \u201cLet You Go,\u201d Lovato realizes it\u2019s time to end a relationship, as she sings, \u201cMaybe we\u2019ll be better as a memory\/ Even if it means that you\u2019ll forget me.\u201d Lovato then slows things down with \u201cGhost,\u201d a touching ballad about \u201cwanting to be haunted for life\u201d by the ghost of her partner.<\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear if the \u201cIn My Head\u201d singer plans to tour the album, though her Los Angeles fans are in for a treat: She\u2019s set to play a special, one-night-only show at the Hollywood Palladium<\/a> on Saturday, Oct. 25, where she\u2019ll perform tracks from It\u2019s Not That Deep along with her greatest hits. The evening, Lovato says, will serve as a celebration of how far she\u2019s come.<\/p>\n \u201cI haven\u2019t announced a headline show since 2023 and i have missed seeing your faces so much,\u201d Lovato wrote on Instagram. \u201ci cannot wait to get back in a room with you all and sing, dance, scream and shake our asses TOGETHER!!\u201d<\/p>\n
