On Thursday, Donald Trump <\/a>announced he would end all trade talks with Canada, effective immediately, over a television ad paid for by one of the country\u2019s provinces and featured former President Ronald Reagan <\/a>criticizing tariffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars,\u201d Reagan said in the clip. \u201cThen the worst happens. Markets shrink and collapse. Businesses and industries shut down, and millions of people lose their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Criticizing the ad, Trump wrote<\/a> in a post on his social media website late Thursday, \u201cTARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a separate post on X, <\/a>the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute accused the province of misrepresenting an April 25, 1987, radio address from the former president, and it encouraged people to listen to the unedited speech on its YouTube channel.<\/a><\/p>\n

Following the backlash, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced <\/a>the province would \u201cpause its U.S. advertising campaign effective Monday,\u201d meaning the ad is still scheduled to play during the first two World Series games over the weekend.<\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe,\u201d <\/a>Joe Scarborough told viewers he followed the foundation\u2019s advice. \u201cAround 3:30 this morning, I listened to the entire address,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I have absolutely no idea what the Reagan Foundation is talking about, because those words in that Canadian ad were directly from that April 25, 1987, address.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scarborough said the ad, in his view, \u201creflected Reagan\u2019s feelings about tariffs 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s strange,\u201d added fellow \u201cMorning Joe\u201d co-host Willie Geist. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing for President Trump \u2014 we\u2019ve come to expect that, to misrepresent things \u2014 but for the Reagan Foundation itself to come out kind of in support of that argument, it is odd.\u201d <\/p>\n

Geist said it\u2019s clear Trump\u2019s \u201cfeelings were hurt\u201d<\/a> over the ad. Co-host Jonathan Lemire agreed, telling the panel that the \u201ccurrent president is so easily triggered that a TV commercial can change international policy, trade policy, foreign policy.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sort of an extraordinary encapsulation of where things are right now for this administration,\u201d Lemire added.<\/p>\n
