Fisherfolk in Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine, have been busy securing their property ahead of the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa, while lamenting slow fish sales. <\/p>\n
When The Gleaner visited the fishing beach on Friday, the area was almost clear of fishing boats and activities had been significantly curtailed.<\/p>\n
“Yes mi boss, di boat dem inna the mangroves as that is where they are safe. We don’t know if Melissa a come but we preparing for it,” Morgan Stanford said while tending to an igloo. <\/p>\n
Fish vendor Marlene Deer said that there has been a lull in sales since the forecast of the storm.<\/p>\n
“Our customers get less, and those who come the beach not buying much, as dem fear dat it will spoil if the storm come,” Deer said.<\/p>\n
As a result of the impending storm vendors are also selling their fish at significantly discounted prices.<\/p>\n
“Mi wi [sell] for even $800 as it better than the fish dem get spoiled,” Princess said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the path to the beach also got some attention with persons cleaning drains heading into Old Harbour Bay. <\/p>\n
Disaster Coordinator for St Catherine, Dr Kurt Waul, said that, for the most part, the parish is advanced in its preparations for the storm.<\/p>\n
