\n A sudden resurgence of interest in Jeffrey Epstein, and unanswered questions about his crimes, has been measurable this month in book sales, Netflix streams and YouTube searches.\n <\/p>\n
\n The data points to deep public curiosity in Epstein\u2019s underage sex trafficking operation, and a possible government coverup, at a time when President Trump is trying to shift attention away from the topic.\n <\/p>\n
\n Old copies of investigative reporter Julie K. Brown\u2019s 2021 book \u201cPerversion of Justice,\u201d about Epstein, have been snapped up by buyers in recent weeks, leaving the book out of stock all across the web, from Amazon and Barnes & Noble to smaller and independent shops.\n <\/p>\n
\n Brown said she has been hearing from interested buyers who can\u2019t find any print copies.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI\u2019m told the publisher is printing more copies,\u201d she wrote on X to people who have been asking.\n <\/p>\n
\n HarperCollins, the publisher, confirmed to CNN that the book is now entering its third printing.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI hope it reflects that people really want to understand the story from the beginning,\u201d Brown added in an interview with CNN.\n <\/p>\n
\n A 2016 book about Epstein from James Patterson\u2019s true crime series, \u201cFilthy Rich,\u201d has also climbed up Amazon\u2019s sales chart in recent days.\n <\/p>\n
\n A Netflix docuseries based on that book, \u201cJeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich,\u201d came out in 2020, and gained new viewers earlier this month when the Trump administration said it would not release any further material from its years-old probe of Epstein.\n <\/p>\n
\n The case-closed message from the FBI and Justice Department fueled an uproar \u2014 and a dramatic spike in people searching for more information about the matter.\n <\/p>\n
\n Google Trends showed a sudden uptick in Epstein-related searches when the government statement was released on July 17, and even higher levels of interest after Trump attempted to quell the outrage.\n <\/p>\n
\n Similarly, from the first full week of July to the second week, US viewership of the Netflix docuseries rose 268 percent, as measured by minutes watched, according to Luminate, a streaming data firm.\n <\/p>\n
\n A search of Epstein\u2019s name on YouTube, filtered only to show videos uploaded in the past week, found more than 40 videos with more than one million views each. Most of the top clips featured late-night TV hosts roasting Trump and speculated that the president wants certain secrets kept under wraps.\n <\/p>\n

\n Last Friday, Trump sued the Wall Street Journal for libel over the newspaper\u2019s account of a birthday letter to Epstein bearing Trump\u2019s name and an outline of a naked woman.\n <\/p>\n
\n On CNN\u2019s \u201cNewsNight,\u201d New York Post editor at large Kelly Jane Torrance said the new Journal lawsuit might be a \u201cbad idea\u201d for Trump because \u201cit\u2019s the Streisand Effect all over again.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cDonald Trump is bringing so much more attention to this story than if he had just ignored it,\u201d she said.\n <\/p>\n
\n Two recent polls indicate that the public\u2019s interest in Epstein and the Epstein-adjacent universe of conspiracy theories does not outrank public policy matters like immigration and inflation.\n <\/p>\n
\n However, when polled on the topic, Americans say the government should disclose more. \u201cAmericans overwhelmingly suspect that the files contain damaging information about powerful and wealthy people,\u201d CBS News pollsters reported Sunday.\n <\/p>\n
\n Brown told CNN that she has been even busier this month \u2014 with source calls, TV interviews and the like \u2014 than she was when Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019.\n <\/p>\n
\n The reporter remains intrigued by unresolved questions, particularly about the sources of Epstein\u2019s riches. \u201cAs they say, \u2018Follow the money,\u2019\u201d she remarked on \u201cAC360\u201d last week.\n <\/p>\n
\n Brown also said she believes government officials \u201cwant to put a lid on this,\u201d and that has made some of Epstein\u2019s victims even more anxious.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI spoke to a couple of them over the past few days and, you know, they\u2019re afraid,\u201d Brown said.\n <\/p>\n
\n Then Brown paraphrased what the sources had said to her: \u201cThe more our government covers up for Epstein, the more fearful I become because I keep thinking, \u2018Who is this guy?
