It\u2019s well understood at this point that there\u2019s nothing really stopping Adam Sandler from being shockingly effective in films except Sandler himself; the man has joked about it in interviews and awards speeches, but there really is a pronounced difference between those drama roles he commits himself to\u2014most memorably, in recent years, with a genuine heart-in-throat performance in 2019\u2019s Uncut Gems<\/a>\u2014and those jobs where he just sort of walks around in a hockey jersey, cracking jokes<\/a>. But we\u2019ve never heard of anyone trying to actually\u00a0force\u00a0the \u201cGood\u201d Adam Sandler into the pair\u2019s shared body\u2014until now, as George Clooney apparently attempted to manifest Adam Sandler, Serious Actor, on the set of their new movie Jay Kelly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is per\u00a0THR<\/a>, reporting from the AFI Fest showcasing of the Noah Baumbach movie, where Clooney reported that he attempted to pull some Jekyll-and-Hyde-type shit on his co-star and long-time friend\u2014with a little additional taste of Beetlejuice in the mix, we guess\u2014by banning anyone from calling Sandler by his \u201cSandman\u201d nickname on set. \u201cYou get treated the way you treat yourself,\u201d Clooney explained of his experiment in radical de-Sandman-ology. \u201cThis was a different kind of role for Adam, and I wanted to make sure that he wasn\u2019t making fun of his incredible talent. He likes to just deflect and I was like, \u2018You know what, dude, you\u2019re really good in this film and you\u2019re a really good actor and let\u2019s not just make jokes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Before we get to Sandler\u2019s response to this, we just want to note what an incredibly funny and bizarre power move this is: It\u2019d be kind of like if everybody else\u00a0insisted on treating Daniel Day Lewis like he was Abraham Lincoln on the set of Lincoln, without ever actually consulting the man himself. Sandler, at least, sees Clooney\u2019s efforts in a moderately positive light. While noting that, \u201cI still call myself the Sandman; he can\u2019t stop me,\u201d Sandler added that Clooney \u201cIs very protective over me. He\u2019s a really nice guy. We would do all these scenes together and we\u2019d get deep together and he\u2019d say, \u2018I just want people to recognize that\u2019 and I\u2019d say, \u2018I\u2019m OK, I like just working hard,\u2019 and he\u2019d say, \u2018No.\u2019 He\u2019s very nice, he\u2019s trying to look out for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay Kelly\u00a0sees Clooney play an aging movie star looking back on his life, while Sandler plays his dedicated manager. The part was written for Sandler by Baumbach, who previously worked with non-Sandman Sandler in 2017\u2019s The Meyerowitz Stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n
