{"id":253460,"date":"2025-10-26T22:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T22:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/253460\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T22:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T22:25:11","slug":"russia-seals-and-cormorants-caught-in-eu-baltic-blame-game-over-depleted-fish-stocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/253460\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia, seals, and cormorants caught in EU Baltic blame game over depleted fish stocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU ministers from the Baltic coastal countries will meet in Luxembourg on Sunday to negotiate fishing quotas for 2026, with many blaming Russian vessels and fish-eating predators for the sea\u2019s poor state.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the planet\u2019s youngest sea, the Baltic is today one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The sea is marred by a wide range of pressures, from climate change and fishing to contamination from pharmaceuticals and submerged munitions.<\/p>\n<p>Together, those pressures have brought many fish stocks to the brink of collapse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit embarrassing that a sea almost entirely managed by EU countries doesn\u2019t produce fish,\u201d said Kenn Skau Fischer, chief of the Danish fishers organisation DFPO.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission has proposed cuts to most fishing quotas, including for cod and herring, often taking a more cautious approach than scientific advice.<\/p>\n<p>With Sweden almost alone in backing the move, talks are set to be tense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Swedish position is very restrictive compared to most other Baltic states, it will be a difficult negotiation,\u201d an EU diplomat told Euractiv.<\/p>\n<p>Another diplomat said that Germany is somewhat aligned with Stockholm.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Finland \u2013 like Sweden, one of the region\u2019s main fishing nations \u2013 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduskunta.fi\/FI\/vaski\/Liiteasiakirja\/Documents\/EDK-2025-AK-35681.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> that the cuts would cause unjustified economic damage.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers will continue the negotiations at Monday\u2019s Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) meeting. If an agreement cannot be reached, they will reconvene on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Blaming Moscow<\/p>\n<p>Latvia has been particularly vocal in opposing the Commission\u2019s proposal and its \u201cexaggerated caution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Riga is pointing the finger at Russia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zm.gov.lv\/lv\/jaunums\/latviju-neapmierina-ka-eiropas-komisija-neievero-zinatnes-piedavato-zivju-nozvejas-kvotu-palielinajumu-2026-gadam?check_logged_in=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accusing<\/a> Moscow of boosting its cod catches \u2013 a stock for which the Commission has proposed deep cuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not prepared to allow this,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zm.gov.lv\/lv\/jaunums\/latviju-neapmierina-ka-eiropas-komisija-neievero-zinatnes-piedavato-zivju-nozvejas-kvotu-palielinajumu-2026-gadam?check_logged_in=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> Latvian agriculture and fisheries minister Armands Krauze ahead of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to tensions, Lithuania <a href=\"https:\/\/am.lrv.lt\/lt\/naujienos\/es-saliu-aplinkos-ministrai-liuksemburge-aptare-rusijos-seselinio-laivyno-keliamas-gresmes-baltijos-juroje-hBqM\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led<\/a> a coalition at last Tuesday\u2019s Environment Council warning that Russia\u2019s shadow fleet is endangering the Baltic ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s continued imports of Russian fish have prompted several countries \u2013 including Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania \u2013 to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Zemkopibas_min\/status\/1981715179944411319\" rel=\"nofollow\">call<\/a> for higher tariffs. Still, Brussels is holding off for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission has said that there is not enough support among member states \u2026 so we are not there yet,\u201d said an EU diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>The EU executive has publicly shrugged off the request by saying that existing dependencies on Russian fish products, like Alaska pollock or cod, have not increased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of the stable import flows, the Commission is currently not considering additional tariffs on imports of Russian seafood products, but it continues to monitor the situation,\u201d reads an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-10-2025-001903-ASW_EN.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">answer<\/a> to a question by Swedish Green MEP Isabella L\u00f6vin.<\/p>\n<p>Seals and cormorants<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Russia, other actors in the Baltic are in the spotlight: fish-eating cormorants and seals.<\/p>\n<p>European fishers are warning that the EU\u2019s efforts to safeguard both species have gone too far and that the predators are depleting stocks, especially cormorants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe damage is estimated to be in the double-digit billions for Germany alone, and across Europe it is likely to be in the triple-digit billions,\u201d reads a letter, seen by Euractiv, sent by the EU lobby Europ\u00eache to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this month.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden and six other countries recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/eu-ministers-renew-push-to-cull-fish-eating-cormorants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">urged<\/a> the Commission to end the special protection status for cormorants.<\/p>\n<p>To the delight of environmental groups, EU environment chief Jessika Roswall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/harvest-the-black-tuesday-of-forest-rules\/#:~:text=more%20sustainable%20alternatives.%E2%80%9D-,Commission,-cautious%20on%20culling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wasn\u2019t<\/a> swayed.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Sweden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/eeu-fisheries-ministers-call-for-seals-cormorants-control-amid-fish-stock-decline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asked<\/a> the Commission to facilitate seal hunting, backed by Estonia, Finland and Latvia.<\/p>\n<p>EU ministers renew push to cull fish-eating cormorants<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-news-link__text\">\n\t\t\t\t\tSweden is once again leading efforts to allow wider killing of cormorants, arguing the birds\u2026\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-news-link__read-time\">\n\t\t\t\t\t2 minutes\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-976127154-1-800x516.jpg\" class=\"c-news-link__img\" alt=\"EU ministers renew push to cull fish-eating cormorants\"\/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EU ministers from the Baltic coastal countries will meet in Luxembourg on Sunday to negotiate fishing quotas for&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":253461,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[47],"tags":[192,79],"class_list":{"0":"post-253460","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253460","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=253460"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253460\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/253461"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=253460"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=253460"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=253460"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
